I wonder how many years it takes to advance to:

1. Second Lieutenant in the British Army (equivalent to First Lieutenant elsewhere in the world), and whether the individual gets to keep her rank if she enters 23rd SAS Regiment; and

2. Hauptmann in the German Army (that rank between Leutnant and Major), provided the individual has obtained a military academy degree.

Another related question, if someone enters the military and decides to take a degree, will those years at the academy be counted in the service? Thank you for answering! :)

you should try looking at the link below may be of some use....23rd SAS regiment is infact a Territorial Unit. However, you cannot pass straight into the SAS regiment, you need to enter the army via a conventional unit.

If the Army agree that you may take a degree it is counted as you service time..... you should note that the British Army does back Officers all the way if want to take a degree if the degree being taken is of some use to the Army lol

"How many years does it take to advance as British Army Second Lieutenant ..."

You would enter as a cadet, and upon Passing Out, you would be a 2nd Lt, and be paid as a 2nd Lt rank.

You might be promoted as "acting Lt" but you would continue to receive your 2nd Lt salary (ie 1 pip) untiil that promotion became "Substantive". (ie 2 pips) so, you do get paid for the rank you actually wear - i.e if you wear 3 pips, you get paid as a Capt, you get called a Capt, even if you may only be an acting Capt ( i.e you are actually a substantive Lt ie 2 pips).

It would be a further 2 years before you'd be considered for your 2nd pip and promotion to full Lieutenant.

After 4 and 1/2 years, you could be considered for your 3rd pip and promotion of Captain.

After 7 years, you'd have to start passing more exams in order to get your majority and above ranks.

However, were you to join the Army direct from University, you would start your Army career as a 2nd Lieutenant, with the salary of that rank.

With regards to your related question - "if someone enters the military and decides to take a degree, will those years at the academy be counted in the service? " -

Were the Army to decide to sponsor you through a University degree, I agree with bfpoonline above - that degree would have to be of some use to the Army, plus, time bars would be stipulated at the time of you made enquiries at the Recruitment Office, and, were you successful in getting the Army to sponsor you, and you later decided the Army was not the career you thought it was going to be, and you decided to leave the Army, you can expect to pay BIG TIME to get your release papers ending your Commission !!

Assuming you are female, why would you want to enter the Territorial SAS Regiment, when your main question was whether the Army would sponsor you through a University degree????

Surely you can't expect tax-payers to pay for a University education in return for a Territorial soldier? I'm almost certain it won't work that way... if the Army (through the tax-payers money) agree to sponsor you to the tune of £thousands, you can expect they will want a lot more from you in return for that education... and as bfpoonline above stated, you wanted to join the SAS Regiment from another Regiment of the Army - which is not the same as the Territorial Army.
