Luke 14:26 literally means love to a lesser degree
1 john 3:15 means a complete hatred to the point of wanting a person killed
this was written to the Jews becoming Christians so you can see the proper context

Translation from Aramaic to Greek to English.
hate=love less
hate=dispise
It depends on how the word is used in a sentence.
Like "fire"
fire=burning with a flame
fire=pull the trigger
fire=someone looses their job
fire=start the oven
So in Luke 14:26, it means If one does "not love me more" than his own father...
And in 1 Jn 3:15 ..everyone who "dispises" his brother...
Even English speaking people must have a dictionary handy when interpreting the English Bible. Our words change meaning over time. It often confuses "us " too.

Luke 14:26 is hyperbole for purposes of emphasis of devotion to God, God must have first place, so much so that the comparison is between love and hate.
1 John 3:15 is also hyperbole for emphasis, but for obedience to the law of life.

In Luke 14:26, Jesus is drawing a comparison of importance by exaggerating a relationship. He is saying that it is far more important to love Him than anyone else, including your own parents. Of course, He is not telling people to hate their parents. He is saying that by comparison to Him, you must love Him more than all else.
In 1 John 3:15, John is writing to the church about abiding in the love of Christ. In fact, in 1 John, the word "abide" occurs 16 times in the NASB and the apostle continually refers to abiding in Christ (1 John 2:4,24,28; 3:6,24, etc.)
Therefore, we see that a true Christian will love the Lord Jesus supremely and in so doing he will not abide in hatred towards his brother.

Hate means love less in Luke 12:26.
You have to study is see the difference; You can't take things out of context.
2 Timothy 5:15
Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Remember to read the whole story that goes with the verse to get the true meaning. In Luke Jesus was calling disciples. In 1 John the verses are describing God's love. Two different scenarios.
You cant take two verses and call them conflicting. you have to look at the whole picture.

Excellent question. The hate in Luke 14:26 refers to loving self or putting yourself or others above God.
The hate in I John 3:15 refers to hating others. We are commanded to love one another as Christ loved us.
Again, most excellent question...

Its the Context! He is first talking on a spiritual level of not letting even your family come between you and the Father,(using the word hate to make a point) and the second on a worldly or fleshly level about real hate of people! And God also Hates, "sin"

Read just a bit farther in Luke 14. You shall find your answer. Jesus is saying that you must put God first, wayyyyyyyy first!! And that that a person should love God sooo much more that it is almost like hating ur brother.
