Not sure if you mean this: (5 + 1/2) * (3 + 3/5)

Change 1/2 into 5/10, and 3/5 into 6/10.
Change 5 into 50/10, and 3 into 30/10.

You can now see that the number is: (55/10) * (36/10).

Together: (55*36) / (10*10), resulting in 1980/100

You can take out 19 times 100 from 1980; so you get 19+80/100
80/100 is 8/10 is 4/5.

The answer: 19 4/5

The trick with multiplying compound fractions is to convert them to improper fractions. So 5 1/2 becomes 11/2 and 3 3/5 becomes 18/5. Now just multiply them together like any other fractions: 11/2 * 18/5 = 11*18/2*5 = 198/10 = 19 8/10 = 19 4/5.
