Better food might help improve the quality of the coat, but (you might not want to hear this) but you need BRUSH, BRUSH, BRUSH. Regular brushing (in some cases, every day) is the only thing that you can do to help control the shedding hair from getting all over everything. I live with 2 Rough Collies and believe me, if I don't brush them on a regular basis I notice a HUGE increase in the amount of hair on everything in my house - especially when they are blowing their coats in the Fall and the Spring.
Personally, I take my dogs to the groomers once a month to let them do a really thorough job and I just brush them quickly a few times a week in between but that might not be possible for you. If possible, brush your dog outside and just let the hair blow away in the wind - birds will use it to make their nests and it saves you from having to clean up!
Good luck!

They're shedding their summer coats right now. Brush your dog well a few times a week (outside) with a wire brush. Send it to a groomer once in a while. But you're not going to make a border collie NOT shed anymore. And shedding is not a good excuse to get rid of a dog that loves you.
*sigh* This is why it's important to research breeds before getting a dog. If you wanted something that didn't shed, you should have got a poodle.

the better the diet the better the coat. Most dogs will shed, some more than others. There are also some food supplements that you can add to the food, they usually are liquid and have omega 3 and fatty acids in them.
Nutro Natural Choice (mentioned in another answer) is good for coat problems and allergies, the lamb and rice formula is really good. The "high end" foods look scary because they cost a little more, but you will ultimately end up feeding less per serving and have less waste to pick-up so the cost really isn't too much more than the by product full bargain brands.
Daily brushing is also a must when it comes to a healthy coat. The brushing will also pull the loose hair off and leave less on the floor.
Good luck.

guess it would have helped if we knew what country you are in.. so we know what brands are available...
NUTRO (not a top food by any means) actually has a guarantee to improve skin and coat and thus helps reduce shedding
regular grooming will help as will excersice
a groomer can "shed out" the dog...
a dog is a lifetime commitment - shedding isnt a good reason for getting rid of a dog...
there are several foods better than Nutro that will help - NONE from grocery store are any good...avoid fillers which are the problem causers eg. by products (beaks feet feathers)

There really is no 'best food' for any dog. I have four dogs, luckily they all are doing well on the food I am currently feeding (Taste Of The Wild). I used to feed Canidae, however, one of my dogs didn't do well on it, so I switched to Natures Variety Prairie. In the past 6 years, I've also fed Wellness, California Natural, Artemis and Innova. Stay away from foods that contain alot of grains, especially corn, and completely 100% avoid food that have non-specific listings of ingredients (meat meal is a no-no; chicken meal is OK). Avoid by-products, 'animal digest' and other nasty sounding ingredients...if it SOUNDS nasty, it probably is! You'll pay more for a good food, but in the end (literally, the poop) you'll be cleaning up less poop because the dog will process more of the nutrients. You'll also feed less food when using a good quality kibble, so in the long run, it is almost the same, or less than crap food!

You can not stop your dog from shedding. What u can do is feed your dog the best dog food, Ask your local pet store, and brush your dog everyday. Another thing that could help in your dogs fur adjust to tempurature, so if it is nice and warm inside and u put your dog out for a pee and it is out for an extended time he will start to thicken his coat. Then he goes inside and starts to shed it because it is warm. Hope this helps a little.
