Those that choose to dialyze longer and/or more frequently than a standard three days a week schedule do better as a group. Generally home dialysis is the only way to receive a high dose of dialysis - PD or Hemo. Check out:

most people on dialysis can live a normal life, however a long and healthy one is uncertain. these people are awaiting kidney transplants because their kidneys no longer work or are just not functioning enough to remove toxins from the blood stream. most people on dialysis go three times a week for 3-5 hours at a time just to remove these toxins. as the kidney disease progresses the more frequent they have to go to dialysis. Also patients that are on dialysis have diabetes, high blood pressure, and other things. the only way for them to truly have a long and healthy life is to have a kidney transplant.

It's very individual. Some people live for a very long time once on dialysis. Others, unfortunately don't. It really comes down to WHY the kidneys failed.

An older patient with diabetes, heart disease, etc would generally have a worse prognosis than a person in their 20's that is health except for their kidney disease.
