A Christian is a person who believes in Jesus Christ. As far as I am concerned, Catholics do believe in Christ. Don't they?

Jeesh!v I wasn't expecting such religious dissaproval of the"church". I just simply wanted to clarify that Catholics are Christian no matter what their beliefs on Christ are. I'm not even Catholic and I'm annoyed.

Yeah, we do. They just don't want to associate with us, because they think we're wierd or whacked out. But actually, we're not...I think that they should realize that we are the original Christians- they are the ones that broke off only about 500 years ago. Before, the only Christians were Catholics. Yeah, we're definitely Christian...wait, what do you mean, we aren't baptised? Yeah we are! "I baptise you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit..." Dude, check your sources before saying stupid stuff like that. Catholics don't get baptised...gosh...

The main reason from what people have said here and elsewhere, is that they don't believe that Catholics are Christians is that they dont defer to the bible and the bible alone.

Catholics know and believe that the Bible was divinely inspired but also know that it was physically written by mortal men. Therefore it can be as flawed as the scripture to which we Catholics also adhere to.

It is true Catholics have many traditions, but that gives us a sense of community stretching back all the way to the apostles. It is true the Catholic Church have done some god awful things in the name of Christ, but other Christian denominations have done the same.

Mary and the saints are another contention for some of the other Christian demoninations. Saints are honoured, they are not venerated in the same way Jesus God and the Holy Spirit is(that is not a mistake in grammar,i.e. Trinity) Mary is revered as the mother of god's mortal form and is believed to be without orginal sin, being one of only two without it.

The Bible is also not considered historical fact by Catholics but rather religious truth. No matter what tampering has happened to it in the past, the truth of Jesus's message can never be covered up.

One last thing, in Northern Ireland is was never a theological battle, it was a battle about persacution and nationalities.

Some people say that the Saints and Mary's place in the religion makes it sound like there are multiple deities being worshipped. I have also heard christians says that true christians don't worship in fancy churches like the catholics do, and that grandeurs costs the poor and is unchristian.

I am with you - I think everyone who turns to Christ is Christian. I know a nun who thinks I am very christian (even though i am not affiliated with christianity in any way) because of the life I live. I don't think it really matters what they think of each other - and if they were truly christian they would not be judging others, lest they be judged, right?

Peace!

They don't really. People who make such claims haven't looked into the Catholic faith enough to offer any valid opinion. But Protestants feel pressured to demonstrate that the Catholic Church is BAD, since they came into existence by rebelling against it. If the Catholic Church is what it claims to be, then obviously it is their rebellion that was BAD, and the resulting manmade tradition that is not godly (not difficult to see, since the stated will of God is "that they all may be ONE"). So, all kinds of imaginative accusations are thrown toward the Catholic Church, and why not the ultimate one - they aren't even Christian! Yep, the Church that we Christians branched off of is not even Christian. Never mind that our tradition has fragmented into thousands of conflicting, contradicting manmade sects in direct violation of the stated will of God. We were justified in this rebellion and in violating the will of God and in setting up this manmade tradition because that nasty Catholic Church is just so BAD, BAD, BAD! In fact, pssst!, rumor has it that they are not even Christian! Nope, there were no Christians on earth until the Good Lord Luther founded our tradition a few hundred years ago. That Church Jesus founded was NOT Christian. They were BAD!

Well, they believe that the pope is the "vicar of Christ" on earth. Can't find that in the Bible, there is no "vicar of Christ" ever alluded to in the Bible.
They go to a man (priest) to get forgiven of their sins. The Bible plainly states that we are to go to the Father through the Son to get forgiven.
They have Mary as a mediator when yet again the Bible states that there is only 1 mediator, that is Jesus Christ.

I could go on all day on this one but to what end?

The people who sit in the catholic churches pews have been mislead by the church and its leaders.
I wish they would stop following "traditions" of men and follow the Bible instead.

There are some very good people in that church, I pray the Holy Spirit opens their eyes before it is to late.

My guess is the rift between the two. I was born and raised in a prostestant church, so when I started going to church with my stepdad, who is Catholic, I was pretty gosh darn confused. The basis is misunderstanding. There are things in Catholicism that aren't explained to non-Catholics (like the feasts of the saints and whatnot), which only make the gap between Catholics and other Christians wider.

The very origin of the Catholic Church is baseless! The "rock" that Jesus mentioned in his conversation with Peter was himself and not Peter. The Bible refers to God/Christ as "the rock" something like 48 times. The Catholic Church have tampered with the Bible and they have 68 books in theirs whilst the King James has 66 books. It denies the very saving power of God through Jesus Christ as they claim to be able to give absolution of sins and have turned the simple Gospel truth into a huge lie. The Lord will destroy the Catholic Church during the tribulation. Revelations Ch.17 V1-9 gives the reasons why.

Because catholics aren't Christian. Christians follow the teachings of Jesus the Christ. Catholics follow the teachings of the pope, and they are highly discouraged to read the Bible, infact, it was even outlawed to read the Bible in about the 60's, still today no catholic I know of has actually sat down and read the Bible beyond any verses that are in defense against anticatholics, due to discouragement by the papists to Bible reading. The papacy also says to not discuss anything about the antiChrist, isn't that because the papacy IS the antiChrist?

I'm catholic and yup. christian however is often used as a term for a non-catholic Christan. maybe it has something to do with Catholics being around so long and the other deviants are rather new?

For the same reason they don't think Mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses, and others aren't Christians. They feel that their doctrine is the best, and anyone who doesn't agree can't join their club. In other words, "If you don't believe the same as me, you can't possibly be a Christian." Don't worry, though. God knows you're a Christian, and that's what matters most.
