No, you do not have to pay to apply for financial aid. There are many free resources to tap into locating it and applying for consideration on both the federal, state, college, and private levels. I know there are people trying to sell a service to help you locate scholarships and financial aid, but the search has become much more easier since the internet has become popular.
First, there is the FAFSA form. If you will be attending college in the next semester, you need to apply now. However, if you are applying for the start of the next academic year, you should apply in January or early February at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov. It will help you tap into federal, state and college need based financial aid.
Second, go to your high school guidance office, if you are a currently attending high school, because they have a list of local scholarships available to their students.
Third, the college financial aid office and website provide a wealth of information on private scholarships offered by companies and organizations. Also, some college major websites or school will list scholarships related to your major.
Fourth, search Google.com and Yahoo.com for scholarships based on your race, ethnicity, gender, and college major.
Fifth, go to the local public library because they have a scholarship book which lists scholarships from some organizations who do not list on the website.
Finally, join several free membership scholarship search websites. Most are updated on a regular basis. Most offer a customized search based on a form you fill out. I know most recommend one website, but some scholarships might be listed on one search website but not another.
Good luck!

no. The FAFSA is the FREE Application for Federal Student Aid. It costs nothing to apply. Most colleges and universities will use the info on your FAFSA to consider you for university scholarships. You will however, be required to pay to apply to the school(s) of your choice to be considered for these. (Meaning Harvard will not just offer you a full-ride scholarship...you first have to apply to Harvard) Any scholarship search service that requires payment up front is a scam. You can find out most information by using the Internet or the high school library.

I don't think so. In fact, if you are asked to pay to submit a financial aid application, it seems like a scam to me. There are companies that will sell you lists of sources of financial aid, but the actual providers of financial aid (scholarships, bank loans, etc) shouldn't charge you to apply.

Absolutely NOT!!! You should NEVER have to pay to APPLY for financial aid of any kind, including loans and scholarships. If you are asked to pay then it is a SCAM. Please, contact your school counselor or college financial aid officer for help.

No, you never have to pay when you fill out a fafsa form. It's always free. Don't ever pay anything for it cause chances are you wont get a response back.
