To be perfectly honest with you, the best way to do boxing at home, is to not do boxing at home. There's all kinds of reasons for this, but I will give you only a couple. I'm writing to you about this with over 33 years of experience and many failed attempts of "Boxing at home"
There's the little mistakes that you pick up while you're training at home, dropping your hand as you throw your jab, not shooting your jab straight out, not pivoting on your foot properly when throwing the left hook, stepping straight back with your head up in the air, cat-pawing when you start to get tired. These are the most common of mistakes that everyone starting out training at home does, maybe not all of them but definitely some of them.
Then there's the fact that you're not around the gym atmosphere
the smell of a boxing gym. The subconscious telling you to push yourself harder than the guy hitting the bag next to you. The fact that your being watched by guys/girls who know what they're doing and you want to show that you belong. The fact that the noises that come from a gym give you a rush unlike anything you've ever experienced.
The money you spend on a "Home Gym" will be a complete waste, how many times have you bought something you had to have and six months later you thought what a waste? Spend your money on a Gym membership or Gym dues, stay away from Health Clubs like Ballys, Golds Gym, World Gym and countless others who know absolutely nothing about boxing except Rocky's coming out on Christmas.
I understand your position completely, to just stay in shape get yourself a freestanding bag, it's a great way to stay in shape. It's next to impossible to get into the shape you have to be in to actually compete at home, for all the above mentioned reasons and then some.
Good luck.

If you are doing it for fitness only and you plan on doing no sparring then I say go for it. But if you are looking to learn and reinforce proper technique, and compete or spar, then you must go to a boxing gym with experienced trainers.
I have hung a heavy bag, speed bag and double end bag in my garage. I also have a full length mirror in their also. Since my days of fighting are long gone I find having that equipment in my garage to be beneficial because of my busy work schedule I can't always make it downtown where the real boxing gyms are.
I have a blast working out at home. But I know what I'm doing (but I'll bet you I've fallen into bad habits without realizing it, from working out alone). If you've never boxed before consider going to reputable boxing gym to receive instruction. For no other reason than avoid getting yourself hurt. This way you can learn proper footwork and proper punching and defense technique. Let me reinforce what Santana said the drawback of training at home without the experienced second set of eyes watching you (your trainer) you can fall into the bad habits Santana mentioned. That's exactly why my days of sparring are over, besides the fact I'm not in top condition to spar anyway. Good luck on your fitness endeavor.

I live in an apartment and have to train in the parking lot. I do my jump rope, shadowboxing, footwork drills, sparing, and other exercises outside. When it gets too cold, I go to the municipal garage and they move a truck out to make room for me to train. I also find parks, backyards, basements, living rooms, and anywhere I can find room.
I will always find a place to get a work out in. I will say though that while I do not own a heavy bag, I have some of the best punch mitts and bags gloves sold in the U.S.. Great equipment helps, such is sold by Ringside Inc, or Title boxing.
Lastly....it takes a lot of HEART.

Skipping, shadow boxing in a mirror, footwork drills and watch tons of boxing matches and training videos.
You cant really learn properly like this and I suggest you go out and find a good gym or boxing coach.

Go down town at nights and beat up drunks and high drug addicts to get a feel for it.
Then mug some people, the money can then fund your boxing lessons and babysitter.

if you want to get better at boxing it would be best if you had someone at home who you can relate to who will motivate and help you with your training.
