I am trying to make a decision between two job offers, corrections officer and 911 dispatcher. I would love to hear from any female corrections officers as to how they like their jobs, as well as 911 dispatchers. The pay is a bit better for the 911 job, hours suck though, I'd get graveyard forever! With the corrections here we work 7/12's and then have 7 days off, and rotate 7 days with 7 graves. Any input would be great, if there are any female corrections officers out there reading this. Thanks!!!

I am a dispatcher.
The hours are bad, but eventually you adjust.
In corrections you would be in more physical danger than in 911.
You would have to deal with the prisoners and all that.
As a dispatcher, you would have to deal with tremendous stress - it all depends if you can handle it.
We have to hear the BS from the callers, the officers, the LT's and everyone in between.
We have to calm the caller to get them to react while we get the ambulance to the scene because seconds count, especially in a medical emergency.
It is very stressful, yet very rewarding when everything goes the right way.
i love my job -- it's the best job i have ever had, even with the stress, the shitty hours, the attitude and the occasional lack of respect. (The "all you do is sit on your ***" mentality.)

It depends on what is better for you. I am a dispatcher and a matron so I get both sides of the job. I deal with the inmates as well as do the dispatching for 911. Dispatching can be very stressful at times and if you dont do well under stress then the dispatching positon is not for you. You also have to be able to keep your voice calm in certain situations even when you are not, because if you dont that will just make certain situations worse. You also have to be able to multi-task in that position....for example when you have a car accident and you have 8 different 911 lines going off at the same time you still must inform the officers of what they have and where it is as well as getting other help that may be needed for that situation, for example an ambulance or rescue. A corrections officer is different. You must be able to stand your ground when coming in contact with the inmates and you must be able to put up with a lot of crap that can be said and done to you. If you want something that is going to be different everyday, choose the dispatcher....if you want something that doesnt change much...do the corrections officer job.

As being a former correction officer i say both are even. in the prisons the inmates have 24 hours a day to think about getting at officers. they are around other inmates and they are crafty. shanks(homemade stabbing, slicing instruments), douches(body fluids, liquids human waste) mixed together then thrown on officers are by far the worst thing to happen...it takes days to get that smell off of you even after multiple showers and then you do not know if the inmate has any diseases. you never know if a bunch of inmates are going to jump you on your tier. you walk down the tier where it is sometimes 100 inmates and only you up there...100 to 1...hmmm. if you do not have the balls or the guts to be a correctional officer stay out. i am now trying to be a police officer here in maryland. i decided i would like to take a chance on the street helping people if i can. yes a police officers job is also dangerous. never knowing what a call can produce. one of the most dangerous calls is the domestic disputes...you just never know if the man or woman is the aggressor nor do you know if you arresst one then the other might come out to defend the arressted. these jobs both are as dangerous as the other one...never knowing what is around the corner...that is why when you hear the true blue it means that law enforcement no matter what branch stick together.

Ex correctional officer married to another ex correctional officer.
Take the 911 job.
Less stress, danger and better working conditions. You can always advance from the 911 job, but a CO job is hard to get ahead from.

I'm not a female corrections Officer, but I was a correctional officer.
I can tell you that the jails are really tough for the ladies. Not just from prisoners but from the male officers.
I would go for the 911 job. Take from one who knows.
Good Luck

I'm a dispatcher and I like it, I've also been corrections and I didn't like it very much but then again I'm not a female but giving my input to help you out. My schedule that I work allows me to be off every other weekend. The thing with corrections is that you have to generally get the inmate the things he needs, so good luck with your decision
