“…And because of this, they said to Ibn Hajar al-Haythami: “Is it allowed for the Muslim to extend his hand when greeting a Christian, so that he could shake it?” He answered: “No, because the Christian will feel at peace when he is shaking your hand. So, it is not allowed for you to extend your hand for him to shake.”…It was narrated to me by the leader of the Islamic Movement in Jordan - our teacher, Muhammad ‘Abd ar-Rahman Khalifah:

The only thing that is forbidden is shaking hands of the oppisite sex that are not close relitives. Besides that there is nothing that says it is forbidden.

For a man to shake hands with a non-mahram woman (one to whom he is not related) is haraam and is not permitted at all. Among the evidence for this is the hadeeth of Ma’qal ibn Yassaar (may Allaah be pleased with him) who said: “The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: ‘If one of you were to be struck in the head with an iron needle, it would be better for him than if he were to touch a woman he is not allowed to.” (Reported by al-Tabaraani; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami’, 5045).

You asked this question based on the knowledge given to you by someone in Jordan. Brain is needed to gain knowledge, to function in this earth, but in the matters of God use your heart. God is a feeling from within. Now let me ask you a question, if you forgot everything that you have in your brains, and here is a human being extending his hand to touch you with respect, how would you react based on the feeling of your heart? Would you extend your hand?
Watch the kids how beautiful they are, have you seen their eyes, so full of happiness, have you seen them smile, their whole being smiles. They know no race, color, or language, Be like kids...innocent and tender. That is godliness. Do not get poluted with all this stuff of not extending your hand to another human being,in doing so you are not respecting who you are.

I will brave this storm. I don't care whether you read the bible or the Koran. Religion is meant to bring peace amongst rich and poor, black and white, strong and weak. There are people who interpret the bible to use it for evil, and those who interpret other writings for their own purposes. Religions should join forces against violence, BUT many don't agree. The Pope should not dictate what religion means to Muslims, nor should war mongers dictate what religion is to so many peaceful Islamics. We should all take back our religions NOW and forever.

Are you going to be angry if we all defy what your highly revered teacher is teaching you? because dear friend we are doing it right now on the internet. I am a muslim and so are all my generations of families from my side and my husbands side and we all shake hands with our christian colleagues, friends and neighbors. salam alaikom.
as a muslim, i am telling u that your info is not correct.
we should not hate anyone. christians are Allah's followers too. just because they don't say Allah, doesn't mean anything. you should check your sources, because this will give muslims a bad name. islam is the religion of peace and love. you should express that. and after all, everyone already thinks we all are terrorists. right?
so, don't throw gas on the fire.

Because your religion does not accept anyone who does not call Allah their leader. A handshake is a sign of acceptance, and a Christian does not follow the word of the Quar'an, therefore, you are not allowed to show acceptance towards a Christian.

ali, it is very difficult to do that in a society that is very multi-ethnic, multi-religious and multi-cultural.

Besides, this is not part of neither the Qur'an, the Hadith, or any legitimate Islamic teaching, so it bears no weight on the religion of Islam.

This is the first time I hear of this...

effective theory yet God is one and genuine...the God of Muslims isn't the God of Abraham...and athiests haven't any God? So shake fingers and believe the brotherhood of mankind and then you'd be closer to the genuine God.

that's the most ridiculous thing i ever heard honestly!!

"Allah forbids you not, With regard to those who Fight you not for (your) Faith Nor drive you out Of your homes, From dealing kindly and justly With them: For Allah loveth Those who are just. (The Noble Quran, 60:8)"

Narrated Jarir bin 'Abdullah: "Allah's Apostle said, 'Allah will not be merciful to those who are not merciful to mankind.' (Translation of Sahih Bukhari)

Allah Almighty in the Noble Quran commands us to return a greeting with a better one or at least an equal one. We must maintain the high standards in manners and always be the best examples.

Let us look at Noble Verse 4:86 "When a (courteous) greeting is offered you, meet it with a greeting still more courteous, or (at least) of equal courtesy. Allah takes careful account of all things."

the sweetness of daily human intercourse is a normal need. we give kindness and courtesy without asking, and return it if possible in even better terms than we received, or at least in equally courteous terms. For we are all creatures of One GOD, and shall be brought together before Him.
