My cats go outside in the daytime and come home at night to sleep. 2 of them come right in and hang out then go to sleep. The other 2 come in when I get home and eat then want out again. Sometimes they don't come back till late at night. What are they doing out there? They are both fixed and not chasing "girls".

If they are like my cats, they are exploring, people watching, playing with bugs and getting fed by neighbors, etc. In short, they have very busy and full kitty lives and they find the fresh air to be more to their liking than the indoors.

Peace!

They "hang out" behind or underneath a bush or some other cool hiding place and watch watch watch watch watch insects, humans, leaves blowing... anything interesting. They also listen to night sounds. Some cats are addicted to the outdoor air and long to go outside even when it is cold. The night air invigorates them.

Well if it's getting cold where you live there are mice, moles, rats, you know, looking for food for winter and they might be hunting these little critters for fun. Or maybe they like the fresh out door air. There are many reason they like to stay out. As long as they're coming back home that should be fine. No worries ~smiles~

Cats are very busy! Sometimes mine is so busy that I need to leave a message for him. He usually gets back to me within 10 minutes.

Actually, I think they just like being outside and listening to all the sounds and enjoying the fresh air.

BTW, I love your Yahoo Answers name.

Cats are very independant animals they are also hunters, so most likely they are out hunting mice and birds then come in at night to get food and love.It is normal behaviour not to worry

Playing, or just re-discovering the neighborhood. Nothing to worry about, my cat has done it for ten years and has never gotten lost, and always comes home at night.

They are simply being cats. Maybe they like looking at the possums (if you are in australia) or even chasing them. Perhaps someone in your street makes nice stews every night and they like to sit and smell (or perhaps they even give them some?). Perhaps they just like to watch the cars go by.

Or maybe they are saying "if she loves me she will come call for me at 3am...lets test her out"

They will still chase girls even though they are fixed...they just can't make any babies. My male cats still are interested in my girl cats when they are in heat they just can't do anything about it. They are also chasing birds and mice and squirrels and bugs.

They are probably watching birds, chasing little creatures, checking out places. I hope they aren't getting into fights, I guess you'd know if they were. They are probably mostly taking nice naps out in the sun.
