What does it mean to answer the phone by saying:

Que onda? or something that sounds like what I spelled. Thanks ahead of time!

I spent the day with a friend and he answered his phone this way all day...I wanted to know without asking him. I figured it meant what's up because that is how he answers his phone in English...thanks.

I'd bet that your friend is Mexican.
You're right, the phrase is Que onda. Onda means wave, or vibration, so the literal translation is What wave? or What vibes?, but it is a common Mexican greeting meaning "What's up?" or "What's happening?"

It doesn't make much sense but "Qué honda" (which would sound like what you typed since h's are silent in Spanish) would be "What sling?" "Honda" is a sling... Where/when/how did you hear this?
