A viral infection or a problem with the bodies ability to produce white blood cells as well as diet can be a factor.
All of these or a combination could be a factor you must have a good explanation from the doctor or otherwise get a second opinion it could be very serious.

Sometimes the cause of a low white blood cell count can't be determined (idiopathic). Known causes of a low white blood cell count (leukopenia) include:

Infections, such as viral infections and HIV
Autoimmune disorders, such as lupus
Certain medications, especially those used in chemotherapy and some antibiotics
Radiation therapy
Bone marrow disease, such as leukemia or myelodysplastic syndromes

Low white blood cell count (leukopenia)

Question:

What causes a low white blood cell count?
Wendy / Canada

Answer:

Infections, such as viral infections and HIV
Autoimmune disorders, such as lupus
Certain medications, especially those used in chemotherapy and some antibiotics

Bone marrow disease, such as leukemia or myelodysplastic syndromes
White blood cells help fight infection in your body. A normal white blood cell count ranges from 4,500 to 10,000 cells per microliter of blood. A mild decrease in white blood cells below 4,500 cells per microliter doesn't necessarily indicate a serious illness. However, a dangerously low white blood cell count — below 2,500 cells per microliter — increases the risk of serious infection.

I found this information at Ohio health.com but you can find a lot of information through the internet I just typed it in. Just becareful that if the count gets to low it can cause colds and other infections very quickly.

That is something you should not ask a layman. You need to call the Dr. and discuss it with him (her).
There all kinds of conditions that can cause low white count.
Do not let the Dr. go until you are satisfied that you understand the situation. If you don't ask the question he does not know that you want an answer.
Good Health.

I'm so sorry about the entire issues your canine is having. I go via sort of the equal thing, it is no longer my dog, but it's my cat. He has had a high WBC first, then it out of the blue dropped and he had a LOW WBC. He then verified constructive for FIV, and i think he has Cushing's sickness. I do know your dog can not get FIV, however has he been tested for Cushing's sickness? Is your canine on steroids/corticosteroids? I know i am generally no aid, but i tried, hope you get the solutions you are looking for

And your doctor didn't tell you anything or suggest?? Call the doctor's in the morning and have them explain the results. You should never leave the doctor's office without getting a full explanation about your treatment, prescription or procedures. You or your insurance company are paying good money for the doctor's visit and what you are paying for is his/her advice.

there are so many things..depends on the value..is it significant? Could just be an infection....

Low numbers of WBCs (leukopenia) MAY indicate:
