this is very informative site, that will show you more than you ever wanted to know about puppy mills> http://www.prisonersofgreed.org/
Many good links on the left side.

The very best way to know if you have found the right breeder, is if the breeder asks more questions about you and your lifestyle, than you ask about their dogs..A good breeder will never try to hard sell a dog..
Yes, there are many nice pups produced in backyards, when 2 admired dogs are bred..but, unless you actually see the parents, and know that they are exactly as you want your puppy to be, then safer to stay clear.. We have a backyard breeder in our town, and I take care of several of her sold pups in the dog day care.. All of them are real sweeties, and all of them are on daily medications for lifelong chronic illnesses...

Backyard breeders and puppy mills are 2 dufferebt terms. Backyard breeders is a term used to describe someone who owns a male and a female and breeds them no matter what quality they are, without really knowing anything about the breed, etc. They breed just because they want pups. They may also let their female dog get bred by the dog down the street or any passing male. The ones who breed the "designer" dogs would be considered BYB(backyard breeders). A puppy mill is a vile, disgusting place where dogs and pups are kept in the most unsanitary conditions and they dogs are bred over and over, every heat cycle until the dog either dies, or is no longer able to have pups. These are often took behind the barns, sheds, etc they are housed in and shot in the head because they do not have any more value to the puppy millers.

Backyard Breeders and puppy mills are two different things with the same results. They breed dogs for reasons other than to advance the breed. They feel that ANY AKC or other 'papered' dog should be bred. They often do not do the proper vet checks on the dogs and puppies, do not screen potential buyers or owners, and feel that it is "Their Right" to breed.

They typically do not show their dogs, have not had their dogs examined by a professional to determine soundness, and throw insults when questioned about ethics.

They do not usually follow the standards of their breed club, the AKC, and traditional guidelines of reputable, responsible breeders.

When you question them about their breeding habits, they typically call you rude, uneducated, stupid, or other names. The BYBs on here frequently send me hate mail, call me a moron, and tell me that I know "nothing" about dogs. They regularly find my answers and 'neg' them for no reason other than their insecurity and stupidity.

BYBs have as many excuses as Bush does.
They breed for their friends or family.
Their dog is purebred, so it *deserves* to be bred.
It's their right to breed.
People always tell them how beautiful their dog is, so she needs to be bred.
Their dog is papered, so it should pass on those bloodlines. Their dog's great grandfather's cousin twice removed won an event once, so the dog has good bloodlines.
They tell people that AKC guidelines are stupid.
They tell people that you don't have to belong to a breed club to breed.

Puppy Mills typically have dozens of dogs and they breed their 8itches on each and every heat. Once the dogs can no longer produce, they kill or dump the dogs. Their dogs have little human contact, little exercise, and little socialization. Puppies are generally ripped away at the tender age of 4-5 weeks to be shipped to the pet store that bid the highest.

The AKC and breed clubs strongly recommend avoiding these types of breeders. They usually are breeding dogs with genetic defects, contributing to animal overpopulation, and give little to no health guarantees. They are not involved with their breed, breeder education, and have no interest in learning ethics. They usually see their dogs as money makers or as 'futhering the line'.

To directly resopnd to your final question - Purebred dogs should really only come from backyards. Breeders should be a person or a family who makes the breeding dogs part of their family. Even though the dog is a winning show dog, a big part of a breed is their temperment - so family exposure is important. People who use only cages and kennels and sheds to raise their dogs are not ethical breeders - they are usually puppy millers. But to be clear, there is a HUGE difference between a BYB and a responsible breeder who has a backyard.

I've found that the louder a person yells about not being a BYB, the more the fit the description. I'll give you a few links. They aren't preachy "NO ONE SHOULD BREED" sites, but factual information. I hope you find it helpful. : )

Simply a puppy mill is where the owners don't care about the dogs they breeding. Several dogs are kept in small confined spaces they are in poor health not fed properly and even some inbreeding just to sell dogs

A BYB is merely a domestic dog mill on a smaller scale. the two attempt to coach canines breeding right into a money-making company while any solid breeder or somebody with a million/2 a ethical experience is accustomed to that respected breeding isn't approximately money. the only authentic difference different than length is that BYBs do usually look after their canines to 3 quantity. They commonly furnish vet care and nutrients while the canines in domestic dog generators stay in disgusting circumstances with insufficient nutrients and water, no vet care, no human interaction or affection. they often overwhelmed and could survive in small cages that are in no way wiped clean out so they stay of their very own waste. BYBs are frequently merely ignorant as to what authentic breeding could be. A domestic dog mill is going previous that. Any moron is accustomed to that ravenous your canines is misguided yet domestic dog generators do starve their animals and lots worse. it particularly is extra effective than merely being uneducated - it particularly is organic evil. you are able to exchange lack of understanding with training yet you are able to in no way ever exchange somebody who's under pressure out to be evil sufficient to be knowingly in touch with the perpetuation of domestic dog generators.

Puppy mills are: "canine breeding facilities (that) frequently house dogs in shockingly poor conditions, particularly for "breeding stock" animals who are caged and continually bred for years, without human companionship and with little hope of ever becoming part of a family. After their fertility wanes, breeding animals are commonly killed, abandoned or sold to another mill. The annual result of all this breeding is hundreds of thousands of puppies, many with behavior and/or health problems.

The puppies will be shipped cross country by truck to be sold in pet shops, but many are also sold via newspaper classifieds or Internet sites — and are often accompanied by false claims such as, "We'd never sell puppies from a puppy mill." "

backyard puppy mill ...where people just breed dogs for the sole purpose of breeding, no matter what the health of the dogs that are used for breeding, they have sick dogs there mixed with other and no vaccines are keep up to date, even if they say they have gave shots themselves you still have to take that new puppy to the vet,for an exam to check for defects and sickness, all puppy's are born with worms, and when old enough they need several sets of shots. Also the mills are dirty, parvo may be there too check the father and mother of all pups to see if they are healthy too

Puppy mills are places that produce quantities of puppies, and only care about making money. They produce puppies with physical, emotional, and social problems that cost the new owners big money to try and fix, or the new owners give up on the problems and dump the dogs in shelters.

Puppy mills keep their breeding dogs in crates, in their own poop and pee, never trim their nails, give them affection, train them, get them vet care and they are often malnourished and sick.

Common known as "backyard breeders", these are people breeding for the purpose of making money. They do not care about the breed standard, making better examples of the breed, or getting health clearances. They just want to breed and make money.
Good breeders breed ONLY to make the breed better and do not breed pet quality examples of the breed. They do health clearances, always take the dogs they breed back, and if anything they lose more money than they ever hope of making.
