Hi... I have been breeding for 9 years. This is how we do it.
At 3-4 weeks pups start getting teeth. Mom starts to wean them. I start by getting a good pup food, not Puppy chow!Large breed if they are large breed pups or regular or now they have small breed puppy food too. You want to see the meat preferably chicken as the first ingredient. I use goats milk as it does'nt have lactose like cows milk. You can find it in the grocery store.I put a small amount depending on the litter size, say 8 pups ,I start with 1 cup.Soak it in hot water for about 10 minutes, stirring it a couple times. Then I make it a mush and add the goats milk ,about a 1/2 cup to start warmed in the microwave for about 25 seconds..I usually start with the morning feeding and I dont let them nurse till after I feed them. I do this for a couple of days then I do 2 feedings. increasing the amounts every couple of days till I am feeding( I have Labs and German shepherds) each pup 1 cup, 2 a day by 8 weeks old. Reducing the soaking time and cutting he goats milk back .
In a low feeding dish, I use a special pup dish but you can use a cookie sheet.
Try to get mom to nurse as long as you can.Even if its once a day but by 6 weeks they are usually fully weaned. At that point they need to be wormed and 1st set of shot given. Good luck.
One other thing....as you are giving pups food you need to cut back on moms food so that she dries up. After pups are totally done nursing you need to increase her food so that she may get back into shape. A dog multi vitamin 2 a day would be a good idea for mom to for a month or so.

this is what i would suggest you do and that is start putting puppy chow on a cookie sheet and soak it with warm water till it is mush and then feed your pups 3 times a day and still make sure they are nursing from mom if she completely stops nursing them then you need to put puppy formula mixed in with the puppy chow cause then they will need the extra nutrients that they are missing from mom,,, this is what i do with my Min Pin puppies when they are 3 weeks old that way they can start knowing what food taste likes and gives mom a break too,,, I hope this helps and Congrads!!!!! on the new puppies

***EDITED TO ADD: (because you are getting some BAAAAAD advice from these novices) NEVER NEVER NEVER GIVE THE PUPPIES COW'S MILK. THIS WILL INDUCE DIARRHEA, and that will dehydrate them causing way more harm than good. These so-called "breeders" make a huge profit from the sale of puppies, and I have NEVER sold a puppy in my life. Make the natural choice and feed them chicken and rice, like I suggest. When they are older and have tooth "buds", then you may choose to start them on puppy chow. NEVER EVER CUT BACK ON THE MOTHER'S FOOD RATION, EVER. Her milk will dry up just as nature intends, when the nursing slows or stops completely. I don't know where these "breeders" are going to school for this info, but it's BULLSH!T >>Trust me***

My advice is to start feeding them boiled rice. The ratio is 2 cups water to 1 cup dry rice. Boil the hell out of it, to the point that each grain looks "bloated". Then, mush it up super good. Each puppy at this point shouldn't be allowed to consume more than a tablespoon or so, about 4 times a day and once in the middle of the night...And if you want to spend the extra money you can prepare the "artificial replacement milk" and cut that into the rice. (Feed some rice to the mother dog, too. She will benefit from the extra carbs.)
The size of a 3 week old puppy's actual stomach organ is very small, about the size of your thumb, so START WITH SUPER SMALL PORTIONS. Rice is the most natural thing you can give them that is affordable to purchase in bulk, and in about a week or so you can increase the portion to 2 tablespoons. Also, you may in 2 weeks boil the rice along with some chicken leg quarters. Leg quarters are so very inexpensive, usually about 0.40/per pound, and I buy them in 10 pound bags at Wal-Mart. (Look for them at the bottom of the "chicken case area" of the meat section.) The puppies don't have to have teeth to eat the boiled chicken if you boil the HECK out of it. I take a big cooking pot and fill it with about 4 cups rice, 10 cups water and 4 chicken legs. When the mixture is done, let it just sit there for the next 4 hours or so. This will allow the chicken fats to be absorbed more uniformly into the rice grains. Pull the chicken from the bone and grind it up as best you can. The puppies will triple in size in the next few weeks, and TRUST ME, you will THANK YOUR LUCKY STARS FOR THIS INFO. I had a very LEAN BUDGET after my second child was born, and this trick came in handy, and saved me a BOATLOAD OF LOOT too. I have helped to deliver AND RAISE 5 litters of puppies on this method. I ASSURE YOU, this is the safest and most affordable solution. Good luck, and feel free to email me with any other questions. I've been EXACTLY WHERE YOU ARE, girl, and I'm glad to help.

If this is the first litter of puppies, maybe the task is overwhelming. Pet stores and Wal-Mart sell puppy formula. You should buy the powder type for economy. Pet shops sell bottles. Your dogs may be big enough to drink from human bottles though. Make sure the mother is getting plenty of nutritious food. This may sound gross but the mother is supposed to be licking the puppies butts clean and that means she eats the feces too. If she's not doing this, you may want to take her to the vet.

If you are not sure about what is going on with your puppies I think I would call a vet asap. In the mean time you might try puppy chow with some over the counter ***** milk. You can find it at a pet store

The answer to the question is: Call your vet and your breeder mentor.

Do you have an ethical breeder mentoring you through this or is the rescue group walking you through? Call them and ask. *After* your puppies are born is NOT the time to be learning about them. Avoid being a BYB and contact a respectable breeder to help you and after this, have the 8itch spayed. Good luck to you and your dogs. : )

vets have what we breeders call a "pit shot" it stimulates the flow of milk also switch the mama's food to puppy food.hopefully you will spay her after this litter.but for anyone that has a pregnant female at about 1 mo. switch the females food to puppy food that is high in protein that help with the mama producing milk for her pups.
