depends.. on a wood floor? yes. On a concrete floor.. no. It's all about stability of the floor under the travertine. It's really pretty weak material and if the floor moves under it, the stone will crack!

yes, my tile installers use backerboard on travertine and all other types of tile ......it is not water tight and can crack if no under layment.
