This one's easy: Since it's a first date, why don't you each pay your own way?

ATTA GIRL! A true 21st century chick!!!

Yup, buy him a coffee. Don't settle for less than gentlemanly courtesies, but let him know you're a modern lady who can (and will) carry her weight.

If he has a problem, let him know that next time it's his turn to pay. If he gets his feelings hurt, playfully threaten to get the biggest and most expensive coffee in the place to wash down the 18 expensive pastries you're going to have. Then ask him if he's too manly to have him take a free coffee.

Have fun. Reverse social norms. Tell him ernestly and with a straight face that if you buy him coffee, he doesn't have to sleep with you but if he gets a doughnut, then you will definitely be expecting favors! Make light of it.

Start as equals and you have a decent shot at a fair "give and take" relationship.

Since you are inviting him you should plan on paying. Let him know "this ones on me" Then it leaves it open for him to ask for a date. If he is persistent on paying, even though you have offered, go ahead and let him pay so it's not uncomfortable. I have dated a lot of guys who would never let me pay for a thing for the first few months of dating.

It's OK either way. If you invite him, I would think you would pay, at least I would. If he offers, let him leave the tip or something. I guess see what happens and go from there. Hope he turns out to be a great guy for ya

It's 2006! I think that in nowadays it is perfectly acceptable for you to pay. I don't know that many guys that would balk at the woman paying. If he does, then just say - okay, I'll let you treat this time...I'll treat next - or vice versa! You might want to wait until the end of the "date" to make that offer, just in case you don't want there to be a next time!

For you to offer to pay is fine, but only as way to find out if he is interested in you. Because if he lets you pay I wouldn't expect too much from him.

Yes I never try to let the woman pay but I do think its a pretty cool move when they offer. Its very polite and considerate.

It is perfectly fine to pay for coffee. If he feels uncomfortable ask him to leave the tip. If he insists, let him pay and you leave the tip.

i might provide her yet another threat, you suggested she replaced into apprehensive, so she might have in basic terms forgot to thank you. As for no longer offering to pay for her own espresso - some adult males particularly get fairly indignant while a woman needs to pay. She could have been uncertain the place you stood on that.
