How can I prevent this?

He might unless, make sure that all stains from his "accident" is gone. If the smell is still in the area he might confuse it with his litter box. As a cat owner (actually they own me) I found that there is a couple of reasons for this happening. The litter box might be dirty, he might be feeling sick (if he's older, maybe the kidney's). It has happened to my cats a few times, but it didn't repeat itself. I asked the wet and he said what I just wrote. If it continues check his poop by bringing it to the vet. They can figure it out by analyzing it. Good luck! MEOW

There could be a number of reasons why your cat is doing this. If you've recently changed the brand of litter that you normally use, this may be a reason for his behavior. If you decide to change the type of litter, do it gradually. Also, make sure that the litter box is VERY clean. What smells slightly bad to us smells REALLY bad to your cat...so make sure you clean it everyday. Make sure you thoroughly wash the laundry he pooped on of course, and also clean the area that was around the pile of laundry as well so he won't go back to the same spot.
Good luck!!

Get a laundry basket with a cover or lid. That will dissuade your cat from using dirty laudry as a bathroom. Also, just make sure that his litter box is kept clean and situated where the cat can do his business in reasonable privacy. :)

You can prevent it by not leaving your laundry near the litter box. Or did you inadvertantly LOCK the kitty out of it's litter area. Any port in a storm, I say.

Oh, and wash that laundry A.S.A.P. ! ! !!

all kidding aside, you mustn't leave the laundry where kitty can poo-poo in it.

try keeping his litter box cleaned . i clean out our's once a day to keep the smell down. it helps keep them from doing what you just asked about . i own five cat's and you'd never know there is cats in my house by the smell. i also use lemon spray to kill the oder or orange scented spray . i used pine sol lemon or orange and a small amount of water in a spray bottle to keep the smell gone .
