Hi, First try not to obsess about fainting or needles prior to going to the doctor. Maybe going with a relative or friend will help keep your mind busy so that you are not thinking about what is about to happen. Have them go with you when you go in for the test and tell them to keep you busy talking etc. Hypnotism to get rid of the fear is helpful. Think of pleasant things as they are doing the test, and do not watch the phlebotomist or the needles before the test is done.

You know, of all the years me being a Phlebotomist, I have never had anyone faint as I drew their blood? However, here is a tip that may help you:

1) It seems to me that your increase in the rate of depth of respiration and a consequent diminution of normal carbon dioxide content, and not to mention your suffering from acute neurotic ansiety. Therefore, you should start by breathing into a paper bag for several minutes to restore the carbon dioxide in the lungs and blood. Because, overbreathing can be dramatically curtailed by demonstrating what is actually happening, you should deliberately breathe in deeply for a few minutes. As the symptoms return, you breathe into a paper bag. With this method, now that you are concious of your overbreathing
you are ready for the needle; the patient rarely does it again.

Thank God this disease if not fatal. If you would like more tips or suggestions of how to overcome this phobia, download the free manual and workbook outlining a brief model of counseling to teach people to overcome their injection anxiety and learn to self inject from The Behavioral Medicine Research Center.

I have to to do the rest of my prenatal bloodwork. The last time I went I was pretty much okay til my blood stopped coming out and I looked at the needle going deeper into my arm and I almost passed out..I got really faint. I'm nervous to go because I didn't like the feeling of almost passing out..maybe I just need a distraction

Stop Fainting

Half the battle is learning to not let the thought of worry take over your brain. You can handle it. Think about the people who have serious illness and have to get a needle as often as daily. The people taking blood are more than familiar with fainting. They will take good care of you. Another reason to relax.

I try not to look at the needle as it is going into my arm.

Other tips are...

*Turn your head away from the technician

*Close your eyes while your blood is being drawn

*I often bring my iPod and listen to music as the procedure is done. Sometimes distraction is the best thing--to take your mind off what's going on.

*Think of something pleasant or think about being/doing something else.

Good luck.

It is a fear response. You could practice breathing deeply and try to keep as calm as possible. You could bring a friend with you to hold your hand. I used to be afraid of needles and now I can watch them draw the blood and even make small talk. All a matter of how you let yourself think about it. Good Luck
