Some DVD player need to switch between i and p. usually its under the DVD menu, or maybe there's a switch behind the player, for sure you need to read the DVD player operation manual.
No, the component is enough.

480 is available in both progressive (p) and interlaced (i) formats. Normally, the TV will automatically adapt to whatever input it is being given. Your LCD tv can only display in progressive format. There are no LCD tvs that display in interlaced mode. Any interlaced output is converted to whatever the screen resolution is, and if that is 720p, that's what the set will show.

Therefore, if the tv is showing 480i input, that means that that is what your DVD player is outputting. Check carefully that you have set it up properly. You do not need HDMI to get 480p; 480p output from DVD players has been available for years, but it is usually restricted to the component (YPbPr) outputs. Some players have a switch on the back to select progressive, others do it through the setup menu.

Since the TV converts it anyway, you may wonder why is it necessary for the player to send out progressive. The reason is that the player will do a better job of "deinterlacing" than the TV.

480 is only available in interlaced format. you will need to either purchase a new DVD or DVD player to get into a Progressive format. There are some DVD players that upscale the 480i to 720p if you choose to go that way.
