Your basic selection criteria start with flow rate @ pressure. This is going to depend on what you are trying to do, but you will find a direct correlation between the horsepower input of the pump motor and the combination of flow at pressure. Note that it is possible to make low flow at high pressure, or low pressure at high flow, but it takes a lot of power to both.

A suggestion is to calculate the amount of power your require (force X distance / unit of time) and convert that to horsepower, then look for an HPU at www.Grainger.com that is about 2X that horsepower.

Calculate Hydraulic Power

You don't need the volume, just piston area and fluid pressure, both in the same units, e.g. kg/cm^2. So whatever you gauge is calibrated in, use similar. Do conversion to tonnes at end. Many pressure gauges on presses are calibrated in tonnage directly. Generally, hydraulic presses will use the piston side opposite the rod for its working stroke. You only need use piston area. If the rod IS on the working side, you will need to subtract the rod's cross - sectional area from the piston's area. Some simple rams don't have a piston. The rod is made very large in diameter, and it's cross- sectional area is what is used to calculate force. The only seal is the seal between the rod and the cylinder. These are a displacement ram, they return by spring pressure or by gravity or by pumping out fluid physically. This type is popular as a press ram, as the rod becomes the working ram with no further mechanical guides.
