If they are calcium stones you should AVOID dairy, as well as calcium based antacids. Depending on how painful they are your doctor may need to prescribe you a minor opioid analgesic. Your physician was right in instructing you to drink lots of water. Also, you should drink cranberry juice because it is great for your kidneys.

Good luck!

I live with kidney stone for over 15 years. every 2 years or so i get one. we call ourselves "the Flintstones" at home. 5 of us have them once in a while. all of our doctors (we live in different parts of the country and the world) said that diet does not help if you have the predisposition to build them. so what has helped me a lot in the last years is a lot of liquid. last year I felt I had a stone and after checking it up, it was true. But i did not have the colic because of the amount of liquid i was drinking. more than the regular 8 glasses at day. beer is good because you pee a lot. there is a home made tea that helps you pass it----you make a tea of the yellow hair of the corn. i know of other teas as well, but u can't find them here in Canada. so drink a lot. you might never have colic again, just a pain telling you that it is there. but it will be easier. you might want to ask you doc to keep a prescription medication with you for emergency, so you wont have to suffer at the ER waiting to be seen. or just extra strenght Tylenol or Advil. good luck.

There are 2 kinds of stones..one is star shaped and is the accumulation of calcium and oxalate.. don't eat dairy if you happen to like cherries or some other fruit with oxalate in them.

You may want to do a search and find the foods containing oxalates.
