My husband's side of the family says it is, but I wonder if that's just how they always do it and not everyone does, because my parents never heard of that. Just wondering as I will be having a potluck for my son's birthday party.

Ha! Wow! I guess my parents are kind of social rejects after all then! Lol.

Yep -

You don't have to make anything extravagant - it is a potluck not a sit down deal - but you should make a ham, meatballs, kielbasa, something of that nature as well as have a few munchies on hand for early birds.

It's your choice as the hostess but I think that's standard issue for a pot luck party

I went to a family reunion in September. The hostess provided sloppy joes, lemonade and coffee. Everyone else brought what what they wanted to. There was no alcohol, but some brought their own cans of pop.

Just be sure you state on the invitations what you are providing, so the guests will know.

Have a good time!

Actually it depends on how many people are invited. The hostess may also provide the alcoholic beverages. She has to do the clean up and set up. If you delegate what each person should bring maybe two meat dishes can help with the expense.
Good Luck.

I don't know if it is customary but I have always provided the main dish for potlucks that I hosted.

If you are having some sort of cook-out potluck, you could say that you will be providing hamburgers & hot dogs, but people are welcome to bring other things to grill if they wish.

If it's just a regular dinner type potluck, I would say that you should provide the meat.

Yes. The hostess provides the meat and everyone else brings a side dish.

Hosting a potluck means you furnish the meat and beverages.

It's your party... make your own rules. I always provide the main meat dish, just because it is easier for my guests to carry salads, casseroles, desserts, etc.

We always make a list of what we'd like to eat, and everybody signs up for something, or adds their own preference.

Have a great party!!

Not that I have ever heard of but typically people discuss what each person is going to bring so there is enough of different types of dishes. I would be more concerned if there will be enough refreshments and ice.

Yes, and the beverages.
