Your handicap in golf is quite an official thing - you need to join a club and get them to recognise your normal score at their course. If that score is, say, 90, and the par for the course is 72, your handicap is the difference (90 - 72 = 18).

You can work out an unofficial handicap the same way.

In case you don't know much about this: if a hole is short (say under 250yards), it's called a par 3 (it should be completed within 3 shots by a professional). 250-500yds (roughly) = par 4; and anything bigger is a par 5. Adding all the 18 holes' pars together (say 10 par 4s, 4 par 3s and 4 par 5s) gives you the par of the course (par 72 in my example).

There is a complicated formula for doing this that the USGA figures out and it would be best for you to go to their web site at ::

http://www.USGA.org

but for your immediate case you can subtract the par for the course from the number of strokes you took and multiply that result by 90 %
and you will have close to your handicap.

Say you shoot 90 and par was 70 then the difference is 20x90%=18

Your unoficial handicap would be 18.

Now you must use the last 20 rounds you play and only the 10 best rounds from the 20 for these equasions to get a realistic handicap.

Yahoo has a neat handicap calculating site that does it automatically for you. All you do is fill in the necessary information about the courses you play and plug in the scores. Check the Yahoo homepage for golf handicaps or something similar and you will find it.

golf handicap is determined by the exta strokes you take over the course. For example if the par for the course is 72 strokes and you take 82 strokes to complete your round your handicap would we 10.
