Would regular sugar work? What about putting sugar in a blender so that it's in smaller particles? Would either of these work?

Powdered sugar is very fine sugar and cornstarch. I never buy it when I can just make it myself by throwing some sugar in the blender with cornstarch and letting it blend for a while.

the blender will work, for sure. But be carefull not to waste the motor of the machineand pass it trough a metalic net after you are done. Else way, just use the regular sugar if it is not for decoration, the sugar will melt, and the final result, will not be so far from the original.

It is true that if you use a blender (a food processer or mini spice grinder is best) to grind the sugar into powder, that it will indeed work! Really! Grind away!!!
