Well, that really depends on your religion. That is something that people of the Evangelical Branch believe, for example. They are known as "Born-Again". However, some people do not believe this. I am a Catholic, and while this is not true of all Catholics, I personally do not believe that a person must believe in Jesus to be saved. I believe that if God is as good and perfect as the bible says, than that means he is going to save all of us, because we are all his children and he loves us.

The price was paid once but one must be willing to accept the price paid. Do you understand the price paid?
Here is the Good Test and if you pass you get into Heaven.
Have you ever told a lie? Doesn't matter how big or small. What does that make you?
Have you ever stole anything? Cost doesn't matter, age doesn't matter? What does that make you?
Jesus said that you look upon someone with lust that you have committed adultery in your heart? Have you ever looked on someone in lust?
Jesus said that hate is the same as murder. Have you ever hated anyone?
One day you will have to stand before a Holy God and these are only 4 of his 10 Commandments, these are the laws that God said would get you in to Heaven but break just one and you are guilty of all. How will you be judged?
Me I am guilty and no amount of good that I will ever do will be good enough to make up for my crimes against a Holy God. What about you. The wage of breaking Gods Laws is death but the grace of God is eternal life. That is the gift bought and paid for at a price, paid by someone else who was not guilty of your crimes but paid it for you.
On that day of judgment before a Holy God will you pay yourself or will those crimes be paid in full?
That is not being saved again but realizing that the gift is there and knowing that without the gift you don't have a chance. Willing to risk it? I'm not.

Look at it this way. If Satan would have known that Christ would be the conquorer by His death on the cross, he never would have seen to it that Jesus paid the price.
Jesus died for our sins, our sickness, our diseases. When He decended into hell, He spent those three days in torture. What ever the devil threw at Him, he overcame. It is when Jesus was raised up that he told His deciples to go about the earth and teach all men these things. Heal them and give them the good news.
His resurection was our victory over sin. If you choose to accept that, then salvation is yours. He is the way, the truth and the light. Those who believe in Him shall not perish. Meaning our souls will be eternal and that we will live at peace in heaven.
The others are correct when they say that God gave us free will to believe or not. He won't force you into believing anything. But if you look in the Bible in Genesis, the tree of life is there for Adam (Ish) and Eve (Isha). The tree of knowledge is there as well, until Eve did the no, no and ate the fruit of the tree of knowledge. The tree of Life was taken away and does not show up again until Revelations. That's because God has it hidden and hidden it will stay until He reins on earth. So, in John, 3:3 Jesus says..."Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdome of God.. 6. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spritis is spirit.. 7. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again."
John is a great book and when there are question arising about being saved, this is a good one for the answers.

He DID save us by dying on the cross. He traded His life for our past, present and future sins, and died for our salvation. However, there's a catch: To be saved, you must believe that Jesus is the son of God and that the Bible is God's word. Because God gave us free will, we have many choices in life. Only those who believe in the Resurrection will share God's glory in heaven.

He didn't save us all when He went on the cross. When He was on the cross, he made a way for us to be saved. But then by walking down that path and believing in Him, that's how we are saved. By believing in Him, we are walking down the path he paved when he was on the cross.
kind of complicated, but you'll get it.

Excellent question! The God's love - Man's choice - God's salvation chain doesn't work for me either. Salvation is not a carrot on a stick. The world by its nature does not want to be saved, and stands condemned before the Lord. That means that faith itself is a gift that we don't have the ability to make a choice for.

Because the bible has been butchered by so many people it's ridiculous and in the end it makes claims which conflict with one another; just like the one you're having a problem with, why do we need to believe in Jesus in order to be saved if he already saved us? We don't, you're just relying on a butchered text.

The Christian belief is not that you are saved because he died. He died to wash away your sins, but in order to be saved, you must *believe* this and accept him as your Savior.
I think you also have to keep asking for (sincere) forgiveness for your subsequent sins and repent going forward ... you can't just accept him and forget him.

He provided the way to salvation on the cross by paying the penalty for your sins. But if you reject that, and insist instead on your own way, then the way is moot in your life.
Each person must receive the gift that was already bought, or it isn't theirs.

Because you have to believe in Him to believe He made that sacrifice for you to be saved. He gave us freewill so we could choose. He did this for us but He wants us to come to Him...He doesn't want to force us. Kinda like the saying goes: if you love something...set it free and if it returns to you it was meant to be.
