Charles Darwin was studying to be a minister before being invited to come aboard the HMS Beagle. Christians turn atheist, agnostic, and skeptical all the time. Dan Barker was once a minister, and now has written several successful books on atheism and religion. He doesn't miss anything in life - just a different view of life. I suspect the same for Charles Darwin.

The the person above me who claimed Darwin's deathbed conversion story, this story has been proven false. Lady Hope started the story as a way of bringing people back to creationism. However, Charles Darwin's children all claimed that Lady Hope wasn't even present at Darwin's deathbed - much the less, Charles Darwin never recanted evolution, or accepted Christianity - he died an agnostic. However, evolution isn't supported by who accepts it - it's supported by the vast evidence.

Where he made a mistake, however, was in the fact that he didn't see that the problem was the theology, not spiritual reality. This is important: the theology was not in sync with what he observed and that was logical given the fact that many theologies have nothing to do with God.
