I think it is a little more detailed than what you are presenting. Not all numbers have meanings, but certain ones do. It is not as clear cut as you describe here. For example "1" is not the number of God, it is basically unity, and so God fits in because He is a unity. But most numbers have both a positive side and a negative side. So "1" could represent unity which is good and positive, but it could also represent independence which is rebellion and therefore evil. It is a real study in itself, and extrememly interesting, and often the best way to get insight into difficult passages for interpretation. I've personally never heard of "2" as heaven/hell, and 3 is not the trinity. 3 is completeness. When you see a three you can see something is completed. Christ 3 days and nights in grave, 3 is the complete God, Isreal went three days into the wilderness (comlete separation) etc. 7 is really the number of God more than complete. 7 spirits of God before the Throne etc. 10 is a completeness in order - Ten commandments were complete, but also foundation for something more. 40 is testing as you mention. I could go on, but I'll give you acouple of sites you can look up. Have fun with it.

I would caution you against trying to figure out why God chooses certain numbers. God's got favorite numbers, but He's broken His own traditions plenty of times.
