I'm on the board of the PTA in our local school. Mostly what you do is volunteer for stuff and help get volunteers (especially in my case, i am the volunteer coordinator), you could also be on the hospitality committe - they organize teacher lunches. The fundraising committe, they plan and get donations for the fundraisers. We do 2 big ones each year (1 is a dance, and one is a carnival). There is also the secretary, treasurer, President and Vice president. I know at our school we appreciate all the help we can get and i'm sure the ppl on the board of your PTA will find you something compatible with your talents and time constraints.

They plan school events, rais money for those events. Disucss problems within the school system. I suggest you attend a few meetings to find out just exactaly what they do. You don't have to join to attend the meetings.

Plan events and act pompous. To the best of my knowledge is not back breaking or mind taxing work. Just helping with the school events and things like that.
