It could be anything - swollen lymph node, a tonsil stone, an enlarged tastebud at the very back of your tongue. I don't think it's cancer, but if you're concerned, then go see your doctor and have it looked at.

Okay, first off, please calm down. Your 17, and the likelihood of you getting cancer is as good right now as me winning the lottery. Even if you had been subjected to serious amounts of smoke, it would take much longer to manifest. As for the soreness and cyst like consistency of the "lump" is more than likely inflamed tissue that has been subjected to some kind of irritant, and your immune system is low. Also, you could also have very swollen lymph nodes under your chin, and that is also a sign of a weakened immune system. The bottom line is, 99.9% you don't have ANY cancer, just an infection. To treat the infection, I would go to whole foods or another market with a natural section and pick up some detox tea and throat coat tea. that will soothe immensely. Also, in the produce section, get a couple cloves fresh garlic and some ginger root (a few fingers thick), go home, chop it up finely and mix both with some juice. Drink small amounts like you would do tequila shots. Both ginger and garlic have been used for centuries as anti-microbial, anti-bacterial, and immune stimuilant. Repeat the garlic and ginger for a few days along with the tea, and plenty of water and rest, preferably with a very nutritious diet (NO JUNKFOOD!). I'm sure you will feel much better, and you'll feel MUCH better about NOT taking any antibiotics, which only supress the immune system further. Good luck, and get well soon!

Could be an infection or swollen gland or a cyst. Chances are it's not cancer. But it's better to get it checked no matter how scared you may be. Most likely it's not cancer. BUT it's important to get checked out, don't wait. If for some reason it was cancer getting treatment as quickly as possible is key to fighting it with success.
I am glad that your parents smoke outside, that is rare in 2 parent smoking households. I applaud them that if they won't quit at least they try to minimize your exposure. Most cancer from 2nd hand smoke isn't in the throat. I think it is more than likely an infection. Either way a doctor will not only put your mind at ease, but hopefully it will be something easy to take care of!

Hi Chris,
I know you are very scared to go to the Dr, but IF it is cancer you can get help right away. If you let it go and don't find out it will only get worse.
The reason I am telling you is because my 28 year old daughter is dealing with cancer (Leukemia) and had she waited, she would not be hear today.
It may just be a cyst and an operation will take care of it. So PLEASE don't wait, go to your doctor NOW!! You are way too young to be going through the what if's and driving yourself goofy wondering what it could be. The longer you wait, the worse it can get and don't forget that cysts of any size do have roots that travel and being that it is in your throat, it can choke you in time.
Go to the doctor and get your answer!! If it is cancer you can start treatments right away and be done with it. My daughter went through hell and back with her cancer since June 14th of this year along with a transplant, but the good news is she still has her life and I have my daughter. She has an 8 year old daughter that is very thankful her mom is going to live and she will have her with her as she grows up. So please go to the doctor Chris and find out what it is.
9 chances out of 10 it may not be cancer, but it's the knowing what it is that will rest your mind at ease. Your too young to worry like that!! I give your parents alot of credit for not smoking in the house!!
Good luck and your in my prayers!

Your glands could be swelling, or tonsils either one. I always get a lump on the left side of my neck when I am getting a sore throat or cold. Could be strep ....go to doc and get a throat culture. Probably not cancer.

tonsilitis !or a throat swollen from strep!those are the 2 most likely answers-a rarer possibility, swollen salivary glands.see a dr,what u most likely need are antibiotics.remember,im not a dr,i cant really diagnose, but these are likely possibilities,in my humble opinion!dont jump to "worst case scenarios".especially in young people, the scary ,dire possibilities that spring to mind-are usually WRONG!good luck, chances are,its ur tonsils.u wont believe how much they can swell!!!!!!!!!!
