BOXER, BOXER, BOXER, you have to have a BOXER, they are the most awesome dogs, very loving, happy go lucky and low maintenance, also very smart.

Depends on where you live. The boxer is a good choice for just about anyone, the Husky could be a little tricky if you live where it is hot or in an apartment or somewhere small. A Husky is going to want to run as they have alot of energy and the hair is a big hassle too if you are not prepared for it. Mastiff's are cool if you want a big dog that will eventually just hang out. Great Danes are a good large breed also. Saint Bernards and Rottweiler are very loyal and protective. Just with those as well as the Mastiff expect excessive amounts of Drool. Hope this helps

You should rescue a mutt. Mutts make the best dogs. But between a golden and a lab? I don't like either. For some reason people like getting these breeds without realizing that if they don't properly train them, they'll be the worst kind of dog to have. Goldens do need a good brushing a few times a week and yes, labs are one of the few breeds that will eat themselve to death (literally) if you free-feed them and don't have them on a strict diet. I say, rescue a mixed breed from a shelter or the pound, the people who work there will be able to match you with a good dog who has what you're looking for.

The thing is - the common breeds are popular for good reasons - they tend to be easier to keep than the rarer ones. If you are a first time dog owner then definitely NOT a husky - they are high-energy dogs suitable for a more experienced handler. A boxer is a much better choice as long as you are prepared to be fairly dominant - and to live with a permanent toddler for 10 years!

Why do you want an uncommon dog? The retreiver and labs are the most popular for a reason. Before you take any of this advice, check the qualities you want in a dog against what these other large breeds offer. If you have kids I suggest the golden.

I have an English Mastiff and she's the best dog I've ever had. They're actually considered a giant breed but are extremely gentle. I have a four year old son and she is very good with him and as a single woman, I highly doubt anyone will be breaking into my house anytime soon, lol. But if they did, she'd probably trade them my life's savings for a belly rub. Best of luck finding your companion. You can also check dogbreedinfo.com, they actually have a compatibility quiz that can help you pick the right dog for your lifestyle.

Do a careful research of dog breeds online. Make sure the general character corresponds to yours. You don't want a dog that needs a lot of exercise if you're a couch potato or do not have a back yard.
Every dog is special and more than what sort of a dog you're getting, it's important how you treat it and how much time and attention you give it.
Good luck!

Boxers and huskys are good, but you might need to consider the climate you are in and the time and money you are willing to devote to a dog. Huskys and boxers need lots of exercise, and huskys are best in a cold climate. Also, go to your local shelter for dogs that really need a home instead of purebreds. Many people find their doggy soulmates there! I have a beautiful bearded collie, but I recommend dogs like greyhounds, irish wolfhounds, and australian shepherds. They are smart, sweet, and easy to train.

Look into Irish Wolfhounds. Make an effort to try and go see some at a breeders, as they are wonderful dogs. It is my opinion that if you make this effort, you will not only be more than pleasantly surprised at just how many endearing qualities and characteristics you will find they have as a breed, but I also opine that if you DO personally see some, you will want one.

No doubt, get a Boxer! I have 2 females. One is a fawn and one is a brindle. They are great. I would never have a different dog than a Boxer. Great with kids. Easy to train.
