If you want to go from Windows ME to Linux, you cannot do this by upgrading. You would have to format your hard drive and make a fresh install of Linux. You would not be able to carry anything from Windows over to Linux.
Linux is much more difficult to install then Windows. You will want to be sure you have install instruction and read them through a couple times before starting.
Linux also can not run any of the microsoft and pc software. It can only run software designed for Linux (which is about 2% of the programs available).
However, once it is up and working, Linux is an excellent OS, with a lot of good features. But you have to be more computer literate to use it then to use Windows.

might want to besides improve to a Linux pc personal computer. really basic to apply and one hundred% GUI, if that is your selection. there is even a DTE for Linux that tries to imitate XP (forgot the call, sorry). experts are stability, ease of use, reliability, criteria, safe practices, productiveness, hardware compatibility, and on and on. Cons: a number of your wide-spread programmes would no longer have a Linux version yet.

Go for PCLinuxOS - it's the easiest Linux to use.

Check out this Acrobat PDF document (500k) which explains Linux in a clear non-geeky way:
