Well, my father is 60 years old. He's quite overweight. He's had prostate cancer. Both knees replaced. Both shoulders worked on. (He's become quite a walking joke in our family. We love him..we just tease.)

Anyway, we just found out that he's recently had a heart attack. (Mild, apparently.) My husband and I eat very well. The healthiest foods we can find. We exercise regularly. We try to encourage my father (we try to encourage all of our parents, actually) to do the same. But, we just can't get him to cut out the half-gallon of ice cream that he can eat in one sitting. He won't stop eating candy. He can probably eat about 3 pounds of food at any one meal. It's really quite gross.

Are there any ideas to get him to eat better? He eats so much of the worst foods. He is really nutrition illiterate. (He thinks that steak is fat-free.)

My father is a very active man. He has two physically demanding jobs. He owns his own businesses. Any tips?

We tease him that he is a bionic man. Nothing that could truly hurt him.

Who buys his food? Whoever is bringing the food into the house needs to do a better job. You can find low fat ice cream and sorbets that are healthier for him. No candy at all. Subsitute grapes and other fruit. Have his Dr. have a talk with him. 60 is NOT old. He could easily live 15 or more years longer if he takes better care of himself.

Are you talking about clowns? They have been around even longer than "the fat old men" you are talking about. Some day you might be a "fat old woman".

Theirs always the idea of persuasion. Everyone has a weak point find his and use it to get him to eat healthier. I do it to people all the time, it really works.

He needs to trade in the ice cream and candy for beer and whiskey. After all that will make him feel alot better since he has to put up with your ridicule and back stabbing.

When you see him doing appropriate things, praise him for it. Tell him his lifestyle will kill him and that you all care deeply about him. Teasing or making comments only builds a larger wall between all of you and him.

Take him to a health fitness place and have the experts talk to him and tell him that you love him and want him to stay healthy and well.
