I love to make crafts for holidays. I made water bottles into scary spiders and prism beads with wire into snowflakes. I love to do this and I want to do this so my children know that making something might take more time than to buy it, but it is your own and it makes you feel great. Another interest is cars, which nobody would know unless they knew me. I have a grand national and it makes me proud, nobody would know that a chick has a interest in cars, especially a pretty one. LOL, jk

I have an almost ten month old son, my only child so far, and I don't really feel I have gotten to the point of really NEEDING hobbies and time to myself, etc., but I am going to attempt to answer this question anyway.
I think a major reason why moms need hobbies is to assert their own identity. while I can't say it has happened yet, I have seen with friends and stuff, especially stay-at-home moms, that their kids are their life. They spend all day taking care of, and interacting with their children, and planning things around them, and its just kids, kids, kids, so I think moms need that time to get away from the toys and the whining and everything else, and be who they are, and do something ADULT. Whether its scrapbooking, reading, etc., they need something.
I think some moms might disagree with me on this, but I wouldn't think that working mothers would need hobbies quite so bad as stay-at-home moms. I happen to be in the middle; I work part time, and that is enough time for me to get away from being MOMMY for awhile. A stay-at-home mom gets no time away, unless she specifically arranges for it, hence, hobbies.
That is not to say working mothers don't need hobbies, but in their case, the hobbies might be more to get away from WORK, not the KIDS, or a little mixture of both.

Moms need "hobbies" or jobs, or whatever to keep them alive. Yes raising children is a 24/7 job but there has to be outside interests or the mom would go crazy.

I am a mother of 6 kids, and I homeschool all of them. Hobbies ARE very important to me. I need some alone time. Life is stressful enough as it is, but when you add the needs of kids into the mix, and the fact that my husband is in IRAQ, that can make a normal person go nuts. I like to read, I like to garden, and sometimes....I like to just get in my car and drive on a country road. I love my life, and I would not chnage it for the world, but I do like to have time for myself. Believe or not, one of my favorite things in the world to do is....grocery shopping. I do not take kids with me, and I just walk through the isles and look and enjoy my FREE TIME!!

I have a few hobbies outside the home. The main reasons why is so that I am able to spend time by myself,so that I know who I am as a person, not just as a mum and a wife.

Because mothering and raising and caring for a family is a selfless act, you tend to fade into nothingness for the sake of your family.
Hobbies keep you sane and provide you with something to do on the down time.

To help keep them sane AND to remain their own person - not just 'mom'.
