How long was Jesus in the tomb?
Depends where you look; Matthew 12:40 gives Jesus prophesying that he will spend "three days and three nights in the heart of the earth," and Mark 10:34 has "after three days (meta treis emeras) he will rise again." As far as I can see from a quick look, the prophecies have "after three days," but the post-Resurrection narratives have "on the third day."

1 day and 2 nights. Went in Friday afternoon, was gone by Sunday morning.

If he was dead for that long his body would have swelled up to an enormous size within that frame of time. Therefore, the resurrection was tihsllub

He was placed in the tomb prior to 6 pm Friday. That would begin the Sabbath. The Sabbath would end at 6 pm Saturday. He arose sometime Sunday Morning. Since the Jews counted each part of a day as a day, He was in the tomb 3 days: Friday, Saturday, Sunday. He arose on the third day.
Be careful with your English word studies, the Bible was written in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek.

God is a God of precise time. Jesus said he would be in the tomb 72 hours just as Jonah was inside the fish 72 hours. He died Wednesday at 3pm and resurrected on Saturday 3pm. In these occasion there were two Sabbaths, the one for Pass Over and the every Saturday ceremonial Sabbath.

Mark 16:1 says when the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, bought spices that they might come and anoint Him.
However, in Luke 23:56, the women returned and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the Sabbath day, according to the commandment.

How could these women buy the spices and ointments after the Sabbath, and yet have them prepared before the Sabbath? That's impossible, unless there were two Sabbaths that week --- the annual Nisan 15 Sabbath, which ushers in the first Day of Unleavened bread (Lev.23:7) and the weekly Saturday Sabbath.

Jesus died late on Nisan 14(wed.), the next day was a 'high Sabbath'-- Nisan 15(thurs.). Next day --Nisan 16(fri.) the women buy and prepare their burial spices, for this is the first opportunity they have. Next day, Nisan 17(sat.) they rest according to the scripture. Next day, Nisan 18(sun.) they go to the tomb of Jesus very early to anoint His body --- but He is gone. He rose from the dead late Saturday, exactly 3 days and 3 nights -- 72 hours -- like He said.

What is the difference between three days and on the third day?
He was placed in the tomb on Friday(day 1) he was there on Saturday(day 2) He walked out on Sunday (day 3) what exactly is so hard to understand about that?
When I drove semi I would come home sometime on Saturday night, and leave sometime on Sunday morning. They considered that to be the weekend, which is 2 days, even though I would only be home for a few hours.

If I remember correctly he was crucified on Thursday, and Mary Magdalene discovered that he had arisen on Sunday Morning. So he arose on the third day. That would work out to three nights and three days from death to resurrection.

Depends. when you want to make a dead man look ressurected, you sneak in at night and remove the body, OR you NEVER put it there AT ALL.
