Never in a million years would I leave it wherever it was when I finished unloading it. My father taught me better than that. If it's a place where you have to put a quarter in to take a cart out, I find someone to give it to and I don't let them give me their quarter. Otherwise I usually drop it in the buggy holder, and I'll take an abandoned one along with me if it's nearby.

I always put it in the cart return. Drives me insane that people can walk for an hour around Walmart, then it is suddenly too far away to put the cart where it belongs?
There is a grocery store next to the office where I work (downtown) They were having a problem with people taking the carts home and leaving them, 4,5,6 blocks away. Every day a truck would come filled with shopping carts collected through the city (75+ carts) So the store installed underground sensors, put sensors on the carts. They posted notices, put notices in bags to let people know when the sensors would take effect. Maybe it's mean, but it was funny to watch people rolling the cart along (most times with only a couple of bags) then the cart would just "stop" moving. They'd be looking at the wheels, pushing, pulling, dragging the cart, completely dumbfounded.

Any of the above, plus one more option (listed below.) It depends on the situation, especially since we shop at any of a number of grocery stores.
The order of priority is as follows:
1. Give it to someone just showing up or a passing employee.
2. Take it back to the store if closer than the nearest corral, or, if no corral exists, if parked as close as corrals usually are.
3. Take it to a cart corral if available.
4. Pop the front wheels up over a curb into grass or plant bed.
5. Leave the cart in a stable position between spaces toward the front of the car.
Around here the slope of the lot can be a factor as well, so bringing it back to the front or shoving it over the curb may be the only options.

I try to park a good ways away from the front of the store just so I will walk more and usually park beside a buggy corral or whatever they are called. I put them there. Some times I gather up other carts and corral them as well,I have even ask other customers if they would like me to take their carts for them. All depends on my mood, but mostly I'm good about putting them where they belong

I'd look for someone to give to. If nobody wants it, I'd return to either the front area of the store or the buggy holding area, whichever is nearer. If both are very far and I'm in a hurry, I'd put it somewhere and make sure it wouldn't interfere with people's parking their cars.

It depends if I have my kids w/me. They are little so I won't just leave them in the car alone or make them walk a half mile to the cart corral thing. So if they are w/me I usually secure it in front of my car or on the side--in my parking spot. If the store doesn't like it--they need to have closer cart holders or guys that continuously collect the carts.
If I am solo...I usually put it in the cart thing.

If I'm closer to the the entrance, I walk it back in. If someone asks, I give it to them (men do that a lot around here), or I put it in the holding rails. I never leave it, I'm afraid it may roll into a car.

I leave it in the holding area, even if it means I have to take a long walk to do so.
