Your friend is mistaken. Cars are only sold from factory in VERY special conditions, and generally ONLY to dealers. This is so the dealers will remain dealers. If factory undercuts the dealers, then who will buy from dealers?

Occasionally the NUMMI factory in Fremont, CA, which is a joint venture between GM and Toyota, have a "tent sale", but that's actually an event held with local GM dealers as the "Auto Mall" is only a few miels away.
