My Jack is a year and a 1/2 old, and she is very aggressive towards other dogs as well as people. If you pick her up or even slightly touch her she freaks out and growls. She hasn't ever biten me but I am afraid of her being around small children. Does anyone have any advice?

You are right to be concerned about her aggression towards people and dogs.

Some of what you are seeing is common in terriers. They can be very territorial and while they are warm and loving to their owners they can be mean and wary of strangers.

Your best chances of helping her would be to enroll in some classes with her.
The first class you take should be an obedience class. You will need the skills to stop her in her tracks if she tries to do something bad. She will also be exposed to other dogs and people there.
Next, take her to some kind of socializing class. It should be a small class so she isn't overwhelmed.
Your goal is to expose her to other people and dogs so that she will not be so scared or aggressive when she sees strangers. If you can help her build up her confidence in safe environments you can start helping her with new environments.

If nothing at all helps after you have tried these things, talk to your vet about medication for her. There are anti depressents and other options to help her mood in general.

Also keep her muzzled when you are in public with her.

Good luck!

First do a health check up with the vet and make sure that she does not have a health problem causing her pain.
Second, use a leash as often as possible, take her every where, use a cage muzzle if necessary to prevent biting and socialize her asap and as much as possible. When she growls, pop the leash, not hard, just correct. Tell her lets go, leave it etc. Be consistent. Don't allow for her insecurites to take over and make an aggressive dog. Far too often small dog owners coddle their Chi or poodle while it growls and snaps saying "it's okay fifi" the dog interprets this as reward! Correct and move on.

It is time to contact a reputable dog trainer to help you with this behavior. Good Luck.
