My best friend found out she passed on Nov 14. I think this is a really big deal and I want to do something nice, but I have no good ideas.

I'm willing to spend up to $200 or so, I'm thinking something engravable would be nice so I could personalize it with initials or the date or some cute message from me.

I'm sure you know your friend the best. So I'm offering to sets of advice; what *I* would do for my friend (who is planning to take the test very very soon) and what I recommend you do if your friend isn't mine.

My friend has been studying her BUTT off, and she's kind of been stressed. I would treat her to a day of fun, luxury and silliness!

So a massage is in order; lunch (at a nice place, or her favourite place); and then a movie and then hitting the town for some partying. Also I'd throw in some gag gifts as well throughout the day (maybe even a prank or two, depending on how much time I plan ahead).

Another idea:

I noticed someone mentioned a briefcase, and that's good. But I'd seriously recommend you buy her some really nice fountain pens. Fancy ones that'll look good when she presents them to people. Once she's working as a lawyer these pens will be a god send for her; she'll be having clients signing documents, or a potential client could ask her for a pen. When she whips out that really awesome pen they'll be impressed, trust me. A handshake may be important, but if she comes out with a rinky-dinky cheap dollar store pen for them to sign with, they may be doubtful.

Oh and business cards. I've never felt more professional than when I got my first business cards.

Without a budget to look in, I'm full of ideas, but nothing to really rein them in. Starting with a smaller budget, you could get a nice nameplate with business-card holder for her desk. This has a nice personal touch and is useful. When I got my first professional position, my husband purchased me one as a gift, it was truly thoughtful and I loved it. This can range in price from $25 to $200.

A nice crystal pitcher with matching glasses could be a nice addition, also, as most attorney's offices I have been in offer water to their clients in this way.

If you know your friends tastes in art, a nice piece for her office would be a reminder of your thoughfulness for years to come and possibly an inspiration as she'll remember that it came from you.
