People who want olives or cherries in their drinks want the TASTE of that fruit. If you bury it in ice they wont be able to.
Do your guests a favor, drop in the fruit separate from the ice

Don't freeze the cherries and the olives. I like to split the cherries with my husband in a kiss.

if you keep your ice in the freezer the whole night. if it is out in an ice bowl the ice will melt and the cherries and olives will fall out of the ice cube anyway.

More efficient but not as palatable...frozen fruits tend to be limp when they are thawed.
