I have a lot of friends who are born again. They are all cool. But there is this other group who all seem just a bit crazy and almost all of them have some serious junk in thier past. Many of them seem to have adictive personalities and is appears that they have traded one thing for another. Instead of alcohol, they become zealots...what gives?

Well, when they come to Christ, or are "born again", as you say, they don't do away with their personality. And some scars from their "before" remain. So that can affect some of their behaviour. Among Jesus' disciples there sees to have been all types!
In your explanation you mention that not all born again Christians are addicts or victims of abuse - 2 groups. It's not the being born again that makes people that way - necessarily, but the combination of things.

It seems to me that religion somethign that rehab clinics (etc.) use to help people turn away from their addictions.

Also.... God likes to use people who are looked down upon by society. Because if he can make use of addicts, imagine what he could do through someone who doesn't have such issues? I'm no expert on the Bible, but I recall a case involving a "harlot" ....

And.... to people who are desparate and want to rid themselves of their "old life" God can be very tempting, especially if they don't have a lot of friends or family to lean on. If you were in need of a friend, and someone told you that God loves you and always will, don't you think you would trust just on the hope that it was true?

Unfortunately, sometimes it is only a temporary fix, but I have known people who take to religion and completely turn their lives around and into something so much better.

Greetings,
Possibly you haven't gone up to them and actually had a serious conversation with them so you make an erroneous assumption about their motives. After all God forgave them their past and we are to do the same. These are the poor and unfortunate lost that we as Christians are to preach the Gospel to so that they may be found and saved and have the opportunity of evelasting life like all other saved Christians.

I am born again, and I am definitely NOT a victim of anything except Satan. I am not a recovering addict either. But those people have realized Christ Jesus as their Savior because they have unfortunately been through an unfortunate experience.

Yeah and sad to think about it because some will go back because it is just a zeal, however Jesus gave the parable of the wedding , no one that was invited to the wedding would come and he sent his servant out into the hedges and highways and was to compel them to come in.Most of the ones compelled were victims of something.

I have notice a lot of that too. There a a lot of Christian organizations that help vulnerable people, some of these organizations offer accommodation to these people. I think Christians have put stability into these peoples lives and that is why they are now Christian.

Something had to kill enough brain cells to allow them to swallow the colossal pile of bilge that is religion.
