talk to him on the phone a few times before seeing him. that way you can ask him the things you'd like to know prior to meeting him. you can get a sense of his personality and the same for him. he may be just as nervous as you are. and if your friend is a real friend she won't hook you up if she didn't think you guys would be good for each other.

There in lys your mistake, you always ask a guy yourself. So when and if you and your friend get into a fight she can't tell him lys to break you two up. About the movies, ask him what type of movies he like to watch (romantic, action etc..). Try to sit down at a nice romantic dinner and just talk about each other and get to know each other well.
