I got my puppy about 9 months ago. He's a German Shephard/Lab mix. I have never loved a dog this much before. He is very loving and loyal and is just the best dog ever. I don't even think of him as a dog. He's like my son almost. I used to see people treat their dogs like that and think they were crazy and I've finally found a pet that I treat like that. I buy him lots of treats and toys, but I also maintain discipline with him. Is it wrong to spoil your dog?

cesar millan said that exercise and discipline comes before affection...and affection doesnt have to be hugs and kisses, it is also water, shelter food, etc.

as long as you are consistent, giving them enough exercise...and consistent discipline...you can give as much affection as you want i believe...but make sure exercise and discipline comes first....

From the brief description you give, I don't think you're spoiling your dog. There is a difference between spoiling and loving unconditionally. Now, if you let your dog run rampant and do whatever he wishes, then you're spoiling him. If you buy him toys to keep him entertained, you're trying to stimulate him. Giving treats is okay, but I wouldn't recommend giving too many because they could cause your dog to become overweight which can lead to health problems. Besides, if you give him stuff all the time, it's not really a treat any more.

It is never wrong to spoil your dog!!!!! Dogs depend on us and we should give them something to love for their dependency. You are not in the wrong for spoiling it. Hey, it just means you love it. As long as you don't let it get away with too much then they are fine. You sound like a good owner though. Plus I do the same thing! Don't feel bad as long as the dog is happy and healthy. :)

It's alright to spoil your dog once in awhile but not all the time because once they know they've got power over you, wierd as it may sound, they will take advantage of you. They are smarter than you think. My dog used to be pretty dicisplined but since her friend/ my other dog that grew up with her, died, she's been little miss pampered and spoilt by everyone. And sometimes she just walks all over us, until i start screaming at her to get out of the hse. lol. Yeah so best not to over do it. Thier clever enough to push ur limits and test your patience.

well yes and no...you dont want to spoil him to the point that he thinks he thinks he is pack leader and you r benath him or him will turn into a terror...but if like you say you still keep him disciplined than thats fine..its like children you discipline then cause you love them and you want them to learn whats best but you love them so much that you show it by spoiling them once in a while also :)... its hard to balance the two evenly but the most important thing is that he is very loved

it's not wrong to spoil them as long as you keep up with the discipline and they know their place! if they behave, the spoiling is ok! i know what you mean. i've wanted a dog my entire life and i just rescued my pit bull/lab mix and she is the most wonderful puppy in the world. she gets spoiled when she behaves :)

no it is not wrong to spoil your dog just keep one thing in mind he is a big dog make sure he knows who is boss you are the alpha male you are boss you want him to look at you to make the decision for him just dont let him ever think he is the alpha male something i do to my dogs i flip them on their back put my hand around their throat and hold firmly they stay dead still and will not move they know i rule the roost i recommend you do that with your dog it may seem cruel but after its over they get up and forget it ever happened and i spoil my dogs to death
if you do this which i highly recommend flp him over and hold him until he calms down he may try to fight but hold on until he is calm do not give up when he is done get up tel him good boy and go on spoiling him if he fights and you get scared that dog controls you and i would get some type of dog training if he calms real fast or puts up no fight continue spoiling him but do this every week or so good luck

As long as you use discipline, it's fine. We spoil our dogs too. They sleep under the covers of my bed each night.

Heather Mallick wrote a column for cbc.ca, the online version of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, called Dogville. In it she rails against dogs and dog owners apparently because Tennyson, her friend’s child with autism, does not receive adequate medical treatment or the funding to pay for it.

I would say that is TOTALLY FINE-----> just as long as you maintain discipline. I know what it is like to truly think of a pet as a family member.
