I have a NikonD50 and i'm looking to get a nice speed light flash for it, any suggestions?

I have a D50 with an SB600 and really like it. If I had the budget I would get the SB800 but you'd really need a D70 or better to make use of the added features. I just finished a photo class and the instructor highly recommended getting a Nikon/Canon brand flash over a third part unit and he wasn't a name brand only guy.
The SB600 has made using a flash a lot easier than the old days. I can now use fill flash without worrying so much about blowing out the image.

If your just looking for a cheap all round flash. Nikon is releasing the new SB-400 for about $130+. It should be very sufficient for general picture taking. If you need more power and versatility. Then I would recommend the SB-600 $250 range. else you can get the SB-800 for more range. I currently use the SB-600 on my D70. The links below would for pricing and reviews.

Since you asked which it "the best," the only answer is the SB-800. Whether or not you need the actual best is up to you, though. Personally, I chose the SB-800 because I NEVER want to be in a situation where I have to say I just don't have quite enough light and wish I had spent the extra money. The SB-600 is a very nice unit, though.

The SB600 or the SB800 are the top of the line Nikon ittl flashes.
Third party manufacturers also make compatible flashes, Metz, Sunpak, etc. I have a Sunpak flash that I use on a N6006 and I like it fine, but Nikon is known for its flash technology. I would probably stick with Nikon.
