A few years back I went to a wedding held in the couple's back yard. It was a simple, quiet wedding but was very nice. I know some of my husband's relation were married in the local park. They had a gazebo decorated with flower garlands wrapped around and woven through the banisters of the gazebo. It was a beautiful wedding. This time of year is pretty chilly in our area, so if you are planning a wedding in the northern hemisphere, better plan it indoors or hope for a mild day.
Our wedding was in January. It was a Catholic wedding in the local church and the reception was in the basement, followed by a dinner at my in-laws' house. Nice, but quiet.

Check out local garden parks. Often state parks have beautiful venues for weddings. The city zoo. Museums. Art gallery. Vineyard. Country club. On a boat.

I got married in a garden in June...absolutely breathtaking. There's nothing like an outdoor wedding. Of course, you have a backup plan in case it rains...or just have some tents set up..

I was married in a beautiful chapel on a University campus. I was also able to have my reception on campus but it had to be "dry" - no alcohol.
