go to http://www.autopatcher.com and you can get ALL the updates needed for XP without the pain in the a$$ of the validation. and no it will not cause you to lose any info.
you can order a cd or download it from the site and it is free.

Download the entire patch. You may have to look for Corporate support section of Microsoft.

They have all of the security-related patches there for download (since Corporate users what to control and install the updates after they've been tested and don't want Windows Update installing stuff willy-nilly.)

No, it should not damage your PC.

Download SP2 and everything afterwards and install them in date order. Put them on a CD and save it for next time.

I would strongly suggest that your download and use FDM (free download manager) and "flashgot" as it can download all of the .EXE files on a page, etc.
It will make keeping track of these much easier.

Re: Doc's autoupdater.
Looks good - I'm going to try it myself.

There are automatic ways of installing patches as well as "slipstreaming (making your own SP2) patched installation CDs)". For more info see:
Description of the new features in the package installer for Windows software updates - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/832475/en-us?FR=1&PA=1&SD=HSCH
"Slipstreaming Updates" - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/814847/en-us?FR=1&PA=1&SD=HSCH
For way too much info see - http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windowsserver2003/deployment/winupdte.mspx

***UPDATE**
I modified the patch search so it should get JUST security updates. It cuts out about 200 results that the first one had.
If you used the "Security" patch search before this was added, I'd recommend the new one (the first one got a lot of "Distinct Disadvantage" umm... - "stuff" too.)

connect to internet and do a windows update from start -> program or visit the site http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and then select XP SP2.

if you had IE7 in earlier installation., then IE would not start up since it requires SP2 to run and windows update requires IE. .. .. huh... chick and egg problem.. :( (microsoft's windows update page does not entertain download of update using other browsers )

dont worry there is a work around. try to get back to IE6 ;) from your installation CD or from google search (ofcourse using some other browser. opera is good :)

You can't, you can only upgrade to SP2 from a genuine copy....and if you could it would not reformat, it just upgrades with nothing lost.

No not possible, you must a valid copy and no sp2 does not reformat anything when you apply it. If you need to register your version you can do so through microsoft's website.

once you're speaking approximately going to the microsoft replace internet site, they don't require the CD key. you in basic terms connect with the abode windows replace internet site, they validate your version with the aid of matching your mac handle with the encoded key of your utility. i've got by no ability been asked for a CD key and that i've got as much as date many machines.
