I'm torn here. I'm constantly doing favors for a friend of mine (like driving them places, getting up extra early to drive them, etc.) , but this person never even gives a simple "thank you". Is this me overreacting or is it rude not to give a simple thank you?

..thanks

Two schools of thought on this.
Perhaps your friend is so comfortable with your friendship that it's just second nature.
The other thought is your (friend) is a sponge, and has little regard for any one else's feelings.

I would hope the first. You have a good heart.

It's always appropriate to say thank you. It's even more appropriate for a person to return a favor somehow.

After a number of favors have been received, the person should offer a card to you, or give a small token of appreciation. Though good friends don't usually bother with such formalities.

A good gentleman friend of mine often says that gentlemen know how to overlook the poor manners of another person. And it's not even definite that your friend is truly appreciative.

So give yourself credit for doing the good deed. And thank you for helping your friend.

While those two words are nice to hear, they aren't always necessary. "Thank you" is used to show appreciation, however, it seems to me that it has become more of an automatic response than a sign of genuine appreciation. Actions do speak louder than words. If your friend does what they can to help you out from time to time, that seems to me like it holds more meaning than simply reciting words that they have been taught to say. However, if all of the good deeds are comming from your end of the friendship with nothing in return, then maybe you should let them know in some way, shape, or form that you feel like you are being taken advantage of.

Yes it is rude very rude. Stop doing them favors until they say Thank you. You are being a good friend and they are taking advantage of you.

I am a person that will do things for others - till i feel I'm taken advantage of. then of course i will just stop one day.

This to me feels like your being taken advantage of.
Just let your friend know. that you cant pick him up one day..
Be it your sick or you have an appointment elsewhere.
Maybe that might wake the fellow up to say thank you next time you do pick him up.

So i think its rude not to say thank you or some words of appreciation.

Next time he asks for a favor just remind him with a story. Like there was a friend who I would help a lot , but he would never thank me, but you wouldn't do that would you?

This is not a friend---this is a leech. Not only should he be thanking you each time, he should give you gas money once in awhile, too.

I'd quit doing it! Just be busy next time. Tell him he'll have to call a cab. You are being taken advantage of.

Your friend is definitely taking advantage of your generosity. Try not being "so available" a time or two. That will get their attention for sure. You don't have to be anyone's doormat. I can almost promise they will see how great a friend you are when you aren't there for them.
