I have my first confession tomorrow, and I'm 46 years old, but I have no idea how this should go. The book says to introduce myself, but not by name...I don't get it can you give me an example of this? What sins do you exclude as being too small to mention...is lying one of those or does it depend on the deception of the lie? I understand all the big ones that I have to include...it's the small stuff that confuses me.

If you are not Catholic and do not know the Catholic ways, please do not answer. I take my being a Catholic very seriously and it is not a joking matter.

Confess all that you can remember.....make a list...write it down...then burn it when you are finished.

No introduction is made....

Just "Bless me Father for I have sinned....I've never made my confession before...."

That's it.

If you can't remember all of the "small ones" (called "venial sins") - say at the end...

"For these and all my other sins which I cannot now remember, I ask for pardon, absolution and penance"

Good luck and God bless you.

I am from the Old School of Confession although I go face to face with the priest but, you certainly could go behind the screen. I am wondering why this wasn't gone over in class with you and if it wasn't how come? anyway, I cross myself while saying Bless me Father for I have sinned. Then I let him know when my last confession was. Then I tell him my sins and to the best of my knowledge how many times that sin was committed. He will give advice or ask questions or just listen and say nothing but, then when you are finished, he will give you a Penance and he should ask for some kind of an act of contrition. This is the one I generally say : Oh my God, I am heartily sorry for all my sins because of they just punishment but, mostly because they offend thee my God, who art all good and deserving of all my love, I firmly resolve with the help of they grace to sin no more and to avoid the near occasion of sin. Then he will give you absolution and you may leave, but be sure to say or do the Penance. Also be sure to mention all of your sins because if you hold any back on purpose (if you forget one it is not a problem, the confession is still good and you are still absolved of all of your sins but, be sure and mention it in your next confession), the confession is invalid for all of your sins.

And to: Up Yours

You shouldn't take confession without it being your official First Confession. Is it your First Confession? Have you been studying and/or converting to Catholocism? If so, the preist will help you through it. You should say "Forgive me father for I have sinned. This is my first confession." Then, he will ask you to confess. Confess whatever is weighing on you as a sin. The ten commandments say not to lie, so that counts.

Why don't you forget about tommorrow, and concentrate on tonight - and pray to your heavenly father about your sins. He doesn't need a middle-man interceding for him from inside of a closed connfessional.

*** This is no joke honey. This is the right way to approach God. Only you catholics bow down to mere mortals for redemption.

Check out the answers from nia and chippy they are on the right track. Do more Bible study and stop relying on a man to tell you what god wants you to do. If a man tells you something ask him for book chapter and verse he is basing his advice on. If he can not do that question his source.

Go straight to Jesus. Man can't save us. Thats why Jesus died for our sins so we could go straight to the Father, we dont need a middle man. God Bless and good luck.

He'll be gentle cause you're new. Just say "Forgive me father for I've sinned. It's been forever since my last confession - this is my first one and I dunno what to do."

Generally you just say your sins like "I've lied, I've taken your name in vain, blah blah." He'll guide you thru it, don't worry.

Work it like an emergency room. Biggest sins first, work your way down and say "stop me when I've gone too low father."

You must ask the priest to guide you if you don't know what to do.

You don't need a priest according to the Bible. Forget that. Go straight to Jesus.
