He was looking to eternal life.. To him that would be the same kind of life God lives as a glorified man. He was hoping he had enough good works to save himself. Because Jesus couldn't give him eternal life he had to earn it. So if Joseph Smith was really a prophet then your Grandfather has a chance at returning to the celestial kingdom becoming a God and going out to create his own worlds.. Jim

I am sorry for you loss and hope that this explanation helps shed some biblical truth on our beliefs.
We believe that after death, there is a waiting period and place. Those who have not followed christ will go to a spiritual "prison" as mentioned in 1 Peter 3:19. Those who were righteous will go to a spiritual paradise as mentioned in Luke 23:43. In both of these places, the spirits of those who have died are awaiting the day of the final judgement and the resurrection as described in Revelations 20:12 and Revelations 20:6. During that time of waiting, we believe that the Lord's work will continue as evidenced in 1 Peter 4:6.
So, death for us, while sad because of the temporary phisical separation from those that we love, is merely another part in the glorious plan that our Father has created for us. We also believe that, through the sealing power of the priesthood, marriage and families can be sealed eternally, see Matthew 16:19.
Your grandfather, according to our beliefs, would cotinue his righteous service to the Lord in paradise, while awaiting the final judgement and subsequent resurrection. Perhaps his greatest concern from this life would be that his family is not sealed to him.
I hope that this has helped explain some of what we believe. If you would like any further information, please let me know as I am more than happy to offer any insight that I can.

So he was Mormon? Was he sealed to his wife in the temple?
Read section 76 of the Doctrine & Covenants...that will help some.
Basically, we believe families can continue through eternity, IF sealed through the Priesthood in the holy temple. That is part of the reason we do temple work for the dead. We believe all must have the opportunity to accept or reject the gospel. since we don't know what their "opportunity" is or when (on earth or afterlife) then we must perform the ordinances for everyone who ever lived. Temple work will also be going on in the millenium.
Any more quesitons, you can contact me...

Oh, I'm sorry about your loss. My grandfather died a year ago. Hmm, I believe President Gordon B. Hinckley had a quote on that recently, that life continues in the spirit world rather similarly to what it is like here. You continue on with family members, learning, working, developing talents, serving. I have heard stories that say we are busier than we were here, or our time is used more efficiently. I have also heard that we have more free time, to do what we want to do. My father had a near-death experience, and while I cannot share many details of what happened to him during that time and the weeks afterward, I do know that he saw at least one family member who had died, and she looked like she was in the prime of life, say in her early 30s, although she was in her 80s when she died. It is my opinion that those who have gone on to the spirit world (sort of like an in-between place before the Final Judgment and Resurrection) are very involved and devoted to helping God and Jesus Christ get ready for the Resurrection and the Milennium. It is not as far away as it used to be. I have heard that spirits miss their physical bodies, because what we experience here on earth is magnified by sensory experiences and reactions that we could not have to the same degree in the pre-mortal life where we as Mormons believe we lived before coming to earth. So everyone who has died is looking forward to having their physical bodies resurrected in perfect form, with the kind of pain and disease and corruption we see on earth now being eliminated. I believe strongly that all of the things we love here on earth also exist in the spirit world, including music and musical instruments, art, building and creating activities, etc.

According to Mormons there are 3 levels of heaven and no hell. Real devout Mormons get the top level.

i'm a Christian and American. i'm no longer particularly specific what the hell Mormonism particularly is even however I even have talked to their human beings usually. I doubt vote casting for a Mormon = vote casting for devil. although I even have began thinking vote casting Republican = vote casting for devil. i do no longer see mendacity to start an oil conflict or extreme application of the dying penalty or opposition to known wellbeing care or failure to enhance the wages of working human beings because of the fact the right thank you to stay with Christ or to be leaders of a democratic u . s . a ..

I am sorry for the loss of your great grandfather.
Having once been a Mormon, I am no longer, I can give a little info.
Mormons believe that we all once lived as children of Heavenly Father in a pre-existence. They believe that Satan and Jesus are brothers. They believe that our time on earth is a probation period. They also believe that baptism for the dead who have not accepted the Mormon teachings.
They believe in three levels of heaven (celestial- the highest, terrestrial and telestial). Only Mormons who live the standards, are current in their temple rituals, make it to the celestial kingdom. They also believe in an "outer darkness".
Mormons believe in becoming gods and goddesses in the celestial kingdom. While Mormonism does not teach polygamy today, it did at one time, and polygamy exists in the celestial kingdom.
While most Mormons today are really good people with good intentions, as well as people who really lead a good clean life... most do not know the true roots of their church, it's founders, and history. I was one of them before my eyes were opened. I wasn't looking to get out... I was a temple recommend and temple attending member who was living the standards taught in this church.
I would encourage you to check out any/all of the sites below before ever considering joining this church.

I'm sorry for your loss, too. My relatives have been Mormon since 1853 with Brigham Young. They all died without a relationship with Jesus Christ and without His salvation. Unfortunately that's the choice that Mormons make when they renouce and condemn orthodox Christianity, deny the deity of the Lord God Jesus Christ, and refuse to worship the Creator and One True God or follow the Word of God in the Bible.
Mormons cannnot tell you where they expect to spend eternity, they do not know - it's all wishful thinking on their part.

Not sure about your great grandfather's beliefs but most Mormon men aspire to be God because the LDS church teaches that it is possible. The Bible of course says that there is only one God and you aren't Him. Isaiah 44 lists the one thing that God does not know: His equal.
