Ok. There's this girl at work (she works at a different section than I do, so the "don't sh1t where you eat" does not apply). She has a boyfriend, which is all I know about that. I was introduced to her through a mutual friend (actually, I introduced myself) who has left our company. However, this girl still talks to me, laughs at my jokes (but my jokes ARE funny, I swear!), and we at the very least say hi when we see each other.

Still, we're not even in the "friends" category, we're just "acquaintances" (and I'd like to keep it at that unless I move up to boyfriend). So I need to buy her Christmas gift carefully. Something that spells "I'm sort of your friend but want more from you, and I don't really care for the fact that you have a boyfriend".

Serious answers only, please >.<

Ok, here's the perfect gift to get a girl in your situation. Something personal to her! For instance, if she loves to read, get her a gift card to Barnes and Noble or if she loves to shop and is girly girl get her a gift card to Bath and Body Works. The point here is to show that you notice her enough to care about what she likes (we love this) but it gives her the freedom to fill in the details with a great gift from her favorite store that she can pick out because YOU made that possible. She'll put that gift card in her wallet and thus be thinking about you until she uses it.

Put the gift card inside a card that is funny (a must) but also personal to her interests while at the same time conveying a sweetness on your part. You can take care of this in your signature. Instead of just scrawling your name, sign off with something that includes "I" and "You" or better yet, WE. Say, I hope you have a great Christmas or We work so hard it's time to get a little gift for yourself!

So, in summary, if you're still at the acquaintence level you don't know eachother well enough to get a tangible gift. Give something personal that establishes credibility for yourself. She'll love you for it and even if she stays with her boyfriend for a little while longer, when things start to go under the first person that will come to her mind will be you and your thoughtful gift. Good luck!

If she wants kitchen stuff then I guess get her that but additionally you should do something thoughtful (thoughtful does not mean expensive) that is about her as well. Maybe plan a special day together doing all her favorite things. Something to show you love her. Then you can get her a mixer too as a 'necessity' gift

I would at least get her a card, not too romantic though and maybe something for her desk or work space. if the office is cold maybe a fleece blanket.
Or you could drop by with two mugs of hot chocolate on the day you planned to give her a gift.

get her something simple, like some flowers, but make it a seasonal mixed arrangement--not roses!! My husband did this for me when we were "just friends" but it clued me into the fact that he was interested without being creepy....of course, I was single at the time, but I still think it would work. Or ask about her favorite authors or musicians and get her a CD or a book. It will let her know you care enough to remember what she likes...
